Marion ranked 8th in Register poll

The Marion Indians jumped into the No. 8 spot in Class 3A in the Des Moines Register prep football rankings Sunday.

Marion (6-1) defeated then-No. 6 Solon, 24-14, Friday night. Solon dropped out of the rankings this week following the defeat.

Marion was ranked earlier in the season, but fell out of the top 10 after losing to top-ranked Decorah.

Marion runs 3rd at North Linn Invy

TROY MILLS - The Marion High School boys placed third out of 20 teams at the North Linn Invitational cross country meet Saturday.

Monticello ran away with the title with 19 points by finishing 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 7th, claiming seven of the top-13 spots overall.

Peter Rethwisch led Marion in 11th place in 17:13.

The Marion girls placed 10th out of 17 teams. Madison Bach led the Indians in 14th place in 15:28.

Indians humble Solon; clinch playoff berth

Thomas Park football field was alive with excitement Friday night.

A rivalry was born between Marion and Solon, as the schools met for the first time on the football field. Indian Homecoming was in full force, as they crowned a king and queen in front of a standing room only crowd.

The rest was simply great football.

Marion jumped to a quick lead in the first quarter, and recorded four interceptions on defense as they defeated the Spartans 24-14. The win clinched a playoff berth for Marion, which holds a one-game lead in Class 3A District 6 with two to play.

Indians, Xavier hold spots in 4A volleyball

Xavier held on to its No. 7 spot and Marion did likewise at No. 10 in the Class 4A volleyball rankings released Thursday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Xavier swept unranked Class 5A opponent Waterloo West in its only match of the past week.

Marion reached the semifinals of last weekend's Waterloo Columbus tournament and finished with a 4-1 mark. The Indians also swept unranked Vinton-Shellsburg on Tuesday and are tied for first place in the Wamac West Division.

Marion runs its Wamac mark to 6-1

VINTON - Marion ran its record to 6-1 in Wamac Conference volleyball matches Tuesday with a three-set sweep of Vinton-Shellsburg.

The Class 4A No. 10 Indians (21-8 overall) won by scores of 25-12, 25-19, 25-18.

Abby Phillips had 16 digs, Amanda Sahm four blocks and Jessica Thomas (20-20), Phillips (15-15) and Johanna Steggall (14-14) were perfect serving. Thomas had seven aces.

Marion is tied for first place in the Wamac's West Division.
