Rethwisch, Bach lead Marion runners at Tipton

TIPTON - Peter Rethwisch and Madison Bach of Marion finished 12th in their respective races at the Tipton Invitational cross country meet Tuesday.

Rethwisch covered the 5K course for boys in 18:20. Marion placed sixth out of 21 teams in the standings. Mount Vernon/Lisbon was the champion.

Bach finished the 4K course for girls in 17:19 to help the Indians place eighth out 19 teams in the standings. Davenport Assumption was the champion.

Thomas helps Marion kill Benton, 3-0

Alyssa Thomas collected 14 kills and three blocks Tuesday night as Marion swept a Wamac Conference volleyball match against Benton Community, 25-8, 25-9, 27-25, at the Marion gym.

The Indians finished with 30 kills in three games, with Kaela Halvorson contributing five kills.

Amanda Sahm had 23 assists and went 17-for-17 on her serves, with six aces. Johanna Steggall went 24-for-25 on serves with seven aces.

Abby Phillips came up with 15 digs and Kaitlyn Nathem had eight.

 

No. 1 Decorah smothers Marion, 35-0

The Marion Indians clasped hands and walked silently off the field at Thomas Park Friday night after being mauled by top-ranked Decorah, 35-0, at home.

There wasn't much to say, except the obvious.

"They're a great team," Marion senior Ethan Herren remarked after the Indians had reached their buses. "It was a battle in the trenches all night. They were low, they were stronger and they were faster.

"They wanted it more," he said.

Marion spikers trip CPU, 3-1

CENTER POINT - Alyssa Thomas collected 16 kills and 10 blocks Thursday night as the Marion Indians defeated Center Point-Urbana, 25-14, 17-25, 25-15, 25-22, in a Wamac Conference volleyball match.

Jessica Thomas went 18-for-18 on serves for Marion with five aces. She also had nine kills.

Amanda Sahm finished with 37 assists and three blocks. Abby Phillips went 21-for-21 on serves (two aces) and had 19 digs. Kaela Halvorson contributed 12 kills.

Marion (1-0, 1-0) is ranked No. 14 in Class 4A.

 

No. 4 Marion braces for top-ranked Decorah

They've ripped out the 65-year-old bleachers at the Thomas Park football field in Marion and replaced them with new seats that are sturdier and hold a few more people.

Just in time.

The Marion Indians, fresh off a 70-7 conquest of Mount Pleasant, will be hosting the top-ranked Decorah Vikings Friday night in the Class 3A game of the week -- and maybe the game of the year.

The Indians jumped to No. 4 in the Des Moines Register poll this week and are ranked No. 5 by the Associated Press as they head into the big contest.
