5 Indians make Wamac softball team

Amber Fiser, Beth Knapp and Michalyn Mohr from the Marion High School softball team have been named second team all-conference in the West Division of the Wamac.

Paige Perkins and Haley Vanourney of Marion received honorable mention.

The Indians finished 24-15 overall this season and 8-10 in the West Division, tied for fifth place with Benton Community.

Fiser, a graduated eighth grader, made the all-conference team as a pitcher. Knapp, a junior, was selected as an infielder. Mohr, a freshman, was named as a utility player.

 

Sloppy Indians swept by Maquoketa

On Youth Night at the Marion High School doubleheader Monday, veteran Indians skipper Steve Fish may have wished some of the excited tykes recognized between games could have suited up on his own team.

For a seasoned squad trying to tie the school record for victories, the listless home team instead played like a bunch of Little Leaguers in losing to Maquoketa, 4-3 and 10-2.

The frustrated Fish had no excuses and no explanation.

Lochner tosses 2-hitter as Indians sweep

MANCHESTER - Levi Lochner tossed a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts Thursday night as the Marion Indians defeated West Delaware, 7-3, in the first game of a Wamac Conference doubleheader in Manchester.

The Indians won the second game, 7-4, to sweep the twinbill.

Mitch Wagner hit a solo home run in the opener for Marion (27-10, 21-7). Alex Charipar collected two hits, including an RBI double.

Marion ousted from softball tourney by Wahlert

Dubuque Wahlert put up two runs in the first inning, added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and held on to upset Marion, 3-2, in a Class 4A regional first round game Thursday night at Marion.

Wahlert (16-24) advances to play Xavier in the regional semifinals Saturday at 7 p.m. at Xavier.

Run-producing singles by Anna Schmidt and Maddy Nillis gave Wahlert a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Marion's Michalyn Mohr got one of those back with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning and that was where the score stayed until the seventh inning.

Marion draws Clear Creek Amana in 3A district

The Marion Indians could have to win a mini-Wamac Conference tournament to reach the Class 3A state baseball tournament this month.

The Indians (25-10) will face Clear Creek Amana (5-22) in the semifinals of the district tourney on Friday, July 13 at Solon at 5 p.m.

If the Indians defeat the Clippers, they'll face either Solon (9-22) or Center Point-Urbana (9-24) in the district finals on Monday, July 16 at Solon at 7 p.m.

And if the Indians win the district title, they could face sixth-ranked Benton Community (22-6) in the substate finals on Wednesday, July 18 at Vinton-Shellsburg at 7 p.m.
