Indians ousted by Mount Vernon, 1-0

Marion gave up an early goal to Mount Vernon that it could not counter and the Indians fell to the Mustangs, 1-0, Monday in a Class 2A first round substate boys soccer game at Marion.

Marion ended its season at 6-10.

The Indians had tying chances. But Enoch Duval's shot in the first half hit the crossbar, and Mount Vernon cleared a Marion corner kick from the goal line late in the first half.

Mees captures 1600 for Marion at state meet

DES MOINES - Lukas Mees won't have to slink around in the shadows at Marion High School this week.

He's a state champion and has the gold medal to prove it.

Mees captured the 1600 meter run at the Class 3A state meet Saturday in 4 minutes, 24.06 seconds in a tight battle with Zach Buchheit of Pella.

Buchheit beat Mees in the 3200 meter run on Thursday when the state meet began at Drake Stadium, but Mees got even on Saturday with a strong finish. "Total revenge," he

Marion claims 4x200 relay at 3A state meet

DES MOINES - The Marion Indians got back in the hunt at the Class 3A state track meet Friday, but it could be a hunt for second place.

The Indians claimed the 4x200 meter relay Friday morning and finished Day 2 of the three-day event with 26 points, tied with Spirit Lake Park for second place in the 3A standings. Decorah holds first place with 47 points heading into the final eight events on Saturday.

Decorah could be hard to catch, but the Indians plan to give it their best shot. "We have potential, but we have to all perform," said Lukas Mees, who hopes to score points in the 1600 meter run on Saturday.

Marion began Friday with 11 points, but jumped to 21 with their victory in the 4x200 relay with Derek Williams, Isaac Smith, Cale Cannoy and Devin LeBeau carrying the baton. That brightened their prospects of challening for the 3A crown.
