Marion High School - Marion, Iowa

Marion track coach fell into the sport

Scott Immerfall hadn’t planned on being the Marion High School boys head track coach this year.

But now, on the eve of the state tournament, he’s taking a loaded squad to Des Moines with a legitimate chance of bringing home the Class 3A team title.

Already, his hard-working squad of both veterans and newcomers can claim to be the best in school history by having set seven all-time records this season. The coach thinks two more school marks could easily fall this week in Des Moines.

A veteran coach with no track background from his own school sports days, Immerfall is quick to credit the success of this year’s team to the athletes themselves.

Linn-Mar, Marion boys eye state track crowns

The city of Marion could become the state capital for boys track in Iowa next week.

The Linn-Mar Lions and Marion Indians will be taking strong contingents to the state track meet in Des Moines, with the Lions among the favorites in Class 4A and the surging Indians among the top picks in Class 3A.

Linn-Mar has firepower at the top of its lineup and is seeded first or second in seven events. Marion has impressive depth, having qualified in 15 of 18 events, giving the Indians a good chance of finishing near the top of the team standings.

"I would say if we're not in the top two or three I'd be pretty disappointed," said Marion Coach Scott Immerfall.

Allison Scott will run at Mount Mercy

Allison Scott has participated in volleyball, basketball, softball and track at Marion High School, but she's picked a sport for college.

It's track.

She's also picked a college and will attend Mount Mercy University. She plans to sign her letter-of-intent with the Mustangs on Tuesday.

Scott placed fourth in the 800 meter run at the Class 3A state meet last year as a junior and has qualified in the 800 again this year. She's also been a part of three relay teams that have placed at the state meet during her career.
