Mims faces 90-day transfer rule

Michael Mims will have to wait for 90 class days to elapse before he's eligible to compete in varsity athletics at Xavier High School, according to IHSAA rules.

Mims, an all-conference basketball player, has transferred from Prairie High School to Xavier High School and began attending classes on Monday, according to a story in Tuesday's Gazette.

Mike Winker, the activities director at Xavier, told the Metro Sports Report they have not counted the number of class days that will elapse from Monday through the start of the basketball season.

Mims, a 5-foot-9 point guard, averaged 13.7 points for Prairie this past season as a junior.

 

Prairie girls sweep MVC tennis meets

Lauren O'Brian and Emma Sedrel combined for a 10-8 victory at No.3 doubles Saturday to help Cedar Rapids Prairie trim Waterloo West, 5-4, in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis meet at Prairie.

Vale Caro, Magui Caro and O'Brian won their singles matches for the Hawks against Waterloo West. Caro and Caro combined for a 10-1 verdict at No.1 doubles.

Prairie blanked Waterloo East, 9-0, in its other meet Saturday. The Hawks won all nine matches by identical 10-0 scores.

Prairie boys win 4 events in Ames

AMES — Isaiah Vlasek of Cedar Rapids Prairie won the 3200 meter run in 10:12.57 at the Hi Covey invitational track meet Friday in Ames.

The Prairie Hawks also won the 4x400 relay (3:30.65) and 4x800 relay (8:42.60).

Ames won the meet with 94.5 points. Prairie placed second out of five teams with 79.5 points.

Prairie received second-place finishes from Trevor Northrup in the 100 (11.34), Jalen Rima in the 200 (22.91), Tysen VanDraska in the 800 (1:57.35), Keagan Pinter in the 110 hurdles (15.87), Pinter in the 400 hurdles (57.71), Matt Hilligas in the shot put (47-7 1/4) and Michael Lamparek in the discus (138-11).

The Hawks also finished second in the 4x200 relay.

Prairie tabs Rickertsen for boys hoops

Cedar Rapids Prairie High School Activities Director Rocky Bennett didn't have to look far to find a qualified candidate to lead the boys basketball program.

Bennett announced Friday that Jeremy Rickertsen has been promoted and will become the new coach, pending board approval. He succeeds James Moses, who resigned after the season.

"We are very excited to have Jeremy take over our boys basketball program," said Bennett. "I have followed Jeremy's coaching career, and he always demonstrated the desire to improve in everything he did.

Bentley named Prairie girls basketball coach

Prairie High School announced Friday the hiring of Josh Bentley as the new head girls basketball coach, pending board approval.

Bentley replaces Steve Doser, who resigned at the conclusion of the year.

"We are very excited for Josh to take over our girls basketball program," said Activities Director Rocky Bennett. "He has an excellent coaching background from a variety of schools with a proven track record.
