Prairie surge bakes Cougars

Andrew Galloro had the ball rolling at Lancer Lanes Friday with a 428 series that helped Prairie eke out a 2746-2738 boys bowling win over Kennedy.

Prairie won the game in the final Baker round game. The Hawks rolled a 204 while Kennedy managed a 179, a 25-pin difference that allowed the Hawks to escape.

Prairie held a 32-pin lead after the first round.

Cadena's pin lifts Hawks by Lions

Jarod Cadena was the most popular guy in the Cedar Rapids Prairie gym Thursday night.

Cadena pinned Joe Gallo in 15 seconds in the final match at 182 pounds to give the fifth-ranked Prairie Hawks a dramatic 38-34 victory over No.4 Linn-Mar in an exciting Mississippi Valley Conference meet.

Prairie trailed, 34-32, when Cadena took the mat against Gallo.

"I was really pumped for that match," he said. "I was ticked that it was that close anyway. I just wanted to go out there and get it done quick.

Lorenzen leads City High by Prairie

IOWA CITY - Haley Lorenzen tossed in 27 points Tuesday night as second-ranked Iowa City High bounced Cedar Rapids Prairie, 60-43, in a Mississippi Valley Conference basketball game in Iowa City.

Olivia Usher collected 18 points and seven rebounds for Prairie (3-2, 2-1). The 5-foot-8 sophomore made four 3-pointers.

The Hawks trailed by just four points at halftime, 33-29, but scored only 14 points in the third and fourth quarters.

Prairie pounds Mount Pleasant, 60-32

Cedar Rapids Prairie enjoys its status as the Forrest Gump-style "box of chocolates" of the Mississippi Valley Conference.

On Tuesday, the Prairie Hawks beat Mount Pleasant, 60-32, in a boys basketballl game at Prairie High School.

Eleven different Prairie Hawks scored, led by Michael Mims with 13 points. Bryce Meeker added eight points.

Muscatine tops Prairie in OT

MUSCATINE - Adam Miller tossed in six 3-pointers and scored 31 points Saturday night as Muscatine trimmed Prairie, 67-64, in overtime in a boys basketball game in Muscatine.

Prairie rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter and tied the game, 56-56, on a layup by Dylan Kuchemann with 19.3 seconds left. Kuchemann was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw that would have given the Hawks the lead.

Jalen Rima scored seven of his 13 points in overtime and gave Prairie (1-2) a 64-63 lead with a free throw with 52.1 seconds left in the extra session. Miller responded with his sixth and final 3-pointer to give the Muskies the lead for good.
