Prairie pops Wahlert, 27-0

Break out the sweet soda.

Cedar Rapids Prairie used its version of the "Orange Crush" defense Friday in shutting down Dubuque Wahlert, 27-0, at John Wall Field.

Prairie (2-3, 1-1) held the Golden Eagles to just nine first downs and 89 rushing yards while piling up 25 first downs and 307 yards on the ground themselves.

"I learned from my dad," Prairie Coach Mike Morrissey said. "Adjust to what our kids do best. This year we had an experienced line coming back. Control the ball more. I think we've done that."

Prairie spikes J-Hawks in 4 sets

The Prairie Hawks collected 57 kills Tuesday night and clipped Jefferson, 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 25-17, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Jefferson.

Rachel Butz led the kill-shot artists with 14 slams. Megan Sprengeler had 13 kills. Meghan Busswitz contributed 12 kills and three solo blocks at the net.

Halle Lueck rolled up 52 assists for Prairie (6-5) and had 14 digs. Malia Gudenkauf had 12 digs and three ace serves. Amanda Stecklein came up with 13 digs for Prairie.

Amanda Ollinger led Jefferson (7-7) with 27 kills and 19 digs. Kaylie Zitek collected 40 assists and three aces. Keke Pledge had nine digs. Kayla Jaschen contributed eight digs and three kills.

Vondracek paces Prairie golfers to win

IOWA CITY - Colin Vondracek took medalist honors with a 4-over-par 40 Monday to help the Prairie Hawks win a Mississippi Valley Conference triangular meet at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City.

Prairie nudged Iowa City High, 172-177, for first place. Waterloo East shot 235.

Cooper Reittinger took third place for Prairie with a 6-over 42.

Prairie - Colin Vondracek 40, Cooper Reittinger 42, Cal Clark 45, Ryan Doser 45, Blake Seda 47, Mitch Lorenz 51.

   

Prairie runs 3rd at Heartland Classic

AMES - Cedar Rapids Prairie placed third out of 33 teams at the 7th Heartland Classic Saturday on the Iowa State course in Ames.

Four Hawks finished in the Top 30 with Isaiah Vlasek 17th, Mitch Pritts 21st, Jake Moore 22nd and Tysen Van Draska 28th.

Edina (Minn.) won the boys' race. Johnston placed second with 168 points, nipping top-ranked Prairie by eight points for the runnerup spot.

Linn-Mar finished 13th and Cedar Rapids Washington was 28th.

Refs' calls blur Prairie loss to IC West

Their names are Joel Hibbs, Troy Hibbs, Neil McCubbin, John Koop and Brian Crawford.

If you cheer for the Cedar Rapids Prairie football team, keep their names in mind and don't invite them to any of your parties or offer them a free bag of popcorn.

They were the officials at John Wall Field Friday night and if you were there, you know it was a night filled with mass confusion due to missed calls, overturned calls, no calls and calls that left you scratching your head.

The referees may not have cost Prairie a chance to upset No.6 Iowa City West, but they sure did not help in any way, shape or form.

Iowa City West escaped, 21-14, in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle that had Prairie fans booing the officials much of the night.
