Prairie girls suffer 2 tough losses

IOWA CITY - The Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team lost a pair of one-run games at Iowa City West Tuesday.

Iowa City West captured the first game, 5-4, in eight innings. The Women of Troy won the second game, 1-0, with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Prairie fell to 7-5 overall and 3-3.

Butz helps Prairie 'dodge' Kennedy

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Tyler Butz hurt his right shoulder this spring playing prom dodgeball.

True story. Prom dodgeball.

Butz is almost fully recovered now and played a major role Tuesday as the Hawks spanked Kennedy, 7-3, to beat the struggling Cougars on back-to-back nights.

Butz went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a sacrifice bunt. He also played a solid game at second base, although he's itching to return to third base once his right shoulder is back to normal.

Prairie splits with No.8 J-Hawks

Halle Lueck drove in the game-winning run with a walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh Monday as Prairie upset No.8 Jefferson, 3-2, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader at Prairie.

Jefferson rolled in the nightcap, 12-2.

Katie Kuch pitched a complete game for Prairie (7-3, 3-1) in the opener. Malia Gudenkauf went 2-for-2 with a double.

Maddie Koolbeck was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Jefferson in the opener.

Prairie pitchers baffle Kennedy in 5-2 win

Spencer "Wild Thing" Dean got his nickname at Prairie High School the last few years when he had trouble throwing strikes in ballgames.

It used to be an insult. Now it's a compliment, because Spencer "Wild Thing" Dean is pitching very well for the Hawks this season.

"I don't mind it," he said Monday night. "Maybe last year it might have bothered me when I was having a rough game, but this year I've been pitching pretty well and helping the team out.

"I just laugh when I hear it now. It's pretty entertaining."

Dean pitched the seventh inning and got the save Monday as Prairie clipped the error-prone Kennedy Cougars, 5-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Prairie.

Prairie splits at SE Polk tourney

PLEASANT HILL - Cedar Rapids Prairie exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday and defeated Western Dubuque, 9-4, in the opening round of the Southeast Polk tournament.

Southeast Polk beat the Hawks, 6-1, in the finals.

Prairie trailed 4-2 entering the sixth inning against Western Dubuque. The Hawks pulled within 4-3 to get the frame started, then Caleb Davison delivered a two-run single for a 5-4 lead. Tyler Butz followed with a grand slam to give Prairie breathing room.
