Harper gets big assist from Kenyon Murray's family

When they first met four years ago, Kenyon Murray was straight with Demetrius Harper right from the start.

Murray, the former Iowa basketball star, was coach of the Prairie freshman basketball team. Harper, in only his second year in the College Community school district after being expelled from McKinley Middle School with two weeks to go in the seventh grade, was trying out for the team.

“I knew who he was,” Murray says, “that he was supposed to be a pretty good athlete. He was kind of shy. But he kept looking down at his feet when he was talking to me.

“I said that showed disrespect and that he needed to look at people eye-to-eye.”

Prairie foiled by Cedar Falls again, 41-30

A year later, but the script stayed the same.

Last season, the lowly Prairie Hawks were tied 21-21`with heavily favored Cedar Falls going into the fourth quarter but ended up losing 41-28.

It was deja vu all over again Friday night at John Wall Field as the undefeated and second-ranked Tigers put on a four-touchdown blitz in the final quarter for a come-from-way-behind 41-30 victory.

Prairie girls run to 2nd place at Western Dubuque

EPWORTH - Beth Heims finished fourth and led the Prairie team to a second-place finish Thursday in the Western Dubuque Invitational girls cross country meet.

Prairie finished in a tie for second with Western Dubuque at 118 points. The Hawks were awarded second because their sixth-place finisher - Hope Steimel - was 44th and Western Dubuque's sixth-place finisher was 60th.

Mariah Kauder and Kylie Kelchen finished 1-2 to lead Cascade to the team title with 69 points.

Prairie's Katie Costigan was 11th.

Prairie spikers swept by No. 10 Tigers

The 10th-ranked Cedar Falls Tigers swept a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match from Prairie Tuesday night, 25-17, 25-13, 25-18, at Prairie.

Kate Busswitz and Megan Sprengeler had six kills apiece for Prairie. Becca Bell and Busswitz had three blocks. Amanda Stecklein collected 10 digs.

The Hawks fell to 9-10 overall and 1-3 in the MVC.

Wash, Prairie finish .500 at CF volleyball

CEDAR RAPIDS - The Washington and Prairie volleyball teams broke even at the Cedar Falls Invitational on Saturday.

The Warriors reached the quarterfinals of the championship bracket before losing to Charles City and finished with a 2-2 record in the tournament.

The Hawks reached the finals of the consolation bracket before losing to Marshalltown and finished with a 3-3 record in the tournament on a busy day.
