Warriors claim 'state' tennis win over Kennedy

The girls tennis meet Monday between Cedar Rapids Washington and Kennedy was billed as the first round of the state team tournament.

But with the competition at Jefferson and just the two teams and their fans on hand, it didn't really have a state tournament atmosphere.

"The first round always feels weird," Washington senior Katie Hammond said. "It doesn't really feel like state until you get down to Iowa City."

The Warriors are headed back to Iowa City after dispatching the Cougars, 5-0, in a Class 2A state tournament quarterfinal. The final four play June 2 at the University of Iowa, the day after the two-day singles and doubles state competition.

Lions outlast J-Hawks; Warriors outclass Bobcats

It was a tale of opposites at Kingston Stadium Monday night as the Washington and Linn-Mar boys soccer teams advanced to Wednesday’s Class 3A substate semifinals.

Furnish wins golf regional; Kamin also makes state

OTTUMWA - Megan Furnish achieved her goal of qualifying for the Class 4A state golf tournament Monday by claiming medalist honors at the regional tournament in Ottumwa.

Now the Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior has a new goal for the state meet next week in Ankeny.

"I'd like to go out and win it, but I'll just go and do my best," she said after Monday's round.

Furnish fired an 8-over-par 80 at the Ottumwa Country Club to win the regional tournament by a comfortable six shots. Her next stop will be the state meet at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny on May 29-30.

Cedar Rapids Washington sophomore MJ Kamin also qualified for the state meet by finishing fourth Monday with a 15-over 87 on the tough course and tricky greens.
