Washington High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Hogg running straight to Harvard

Cedar Rapids Washington will have a Harvard man on its team for the Class 4A state track meet in Des Moines this week.

Robert Hogg, a superior student and one of the top half-milers in Iowa, will enroll at Harvard University this summer as a member of their cross country and track squads.

He visited the Ivy League school in Massachusetts this spring and fell in love with the historic college.

He likes the way "Harvard" sounds when you say it out loud.

Foreman, J-Hawks face stiff tests at state

Washington senior Brooke Foreman can expect stiff competition next week when she seeks to defend her Class 4A state title in the 400 meter hurdles.

The same holds true for Cedar Rapids Jefferson as the J-Hawks try to claim back-to-back state titles in the 4x200 relay.

Foreman is seeded fourth in the 400 hurdles behind Anne Leners of Pleasant Valley, Sarah Plock of Iowa City High and Jenny Roberts of Ankeny. Leners nipped Foreman for the 400 hurdles title at the Drake Relays and Plock has successfully challenged Foreman in the Mississippi Valley Conference this year despite being a freshman.

Hickok wins 3 events for Warriors

WATERLOO - Drake Hickok led Cedar Rapids Washington's march to Des Moines Thursday by winning three events at the Class 4A state qualifying track meet in Waterloo.

Hickok captured the 110 high hurdles and 400 low hurdles and ran the opening leg on Washington's triumphant 4x400 relay with Robert Hogg, Trevor Luebe and Nick Corbett.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for the state meet in Des Moines next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. In addition, 12 at-large berths will be selected from around the state to make for 24 qualifiers in each event at state.

Etienne Nzoyisaba won the 3200 meter run for the Warriors.

Sanchez inherits winless team at Washington

Adam Sanchez has a 3-year-old daughter and twin 1-year-old sons, so he has loads of experience with raising babies.

It could come in handy with his new job as the boys basketball coach at Cedar Rapids Washington.

Sanchez, 29, was officially named to the post Friday morning. He inherits a program that finished 0-and-21 this past season, so he'll have to raise these young Warriors and perhaps change a few diapers as he tries to rebuild the program.

"It begins immediately. But yeah, it will be a challenge," Sanchez said Friday afternoon, adding it's a challenge he gladly accepts.

Warriors claim sprint medley at Drake

DES MOINES - Mitch Bredeson, Will Griffin, Nick Corbett and Robert Hogg came to the 103rd Annual Drake Relays Friday to set a record.

They got something else. Something better.

The Cedar Rapids Washington quartet captured the high school sprint medley in 3 minutes, 30.16 seconds to lead all Metro performers on a cold, raw day in Des Moines.

"We tried to get the school record," Griffin explained after the medley. "We didn't quite get it, but Drake is probably good enough."
