Alex Carr commits to UNI

Washington running back Alex Carr announced Monday night that he has decided to play college football at the University of Northern Iowa, The Cedar Rapids Gazette reported on one of its websites.

Carr said he will play either running back, cornerback or safety. He was a two-way starter for the Warriors at running back and cornerback.

Carr rushed for 1,911 yards and 25 touchdowns in 10 games as a senior.

Ashley Piper headed to Colorado Christian

Ashley Piper had never heard of Colorado Christian University before  last summer, but she’s learning fast.

Piper has signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball at the NCAA Division II school in Lakewood, Colo., next season.

Piper, a 5-foot-9 guard, is averaging 7.1 points for the Cedar Rapids Washington girls’ basketball team, which is 9-0 and ranked fifth in the state.

Boys keglers fall at City High

IOWA CITY -- Austin Kibbler rolled games of 256 and 248 for a 504 series that sent Iowa City High past Washington, 2855-2706, Friday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys bowling meet at Colonial Lanes.

Zach Christensen rolled a 219 high game and 406 series for Washington (5-7, 2-5 MVC).  Jay Niblick had a 196 game and Mitch Beebe a 372 series.

Iowa City High is 5-6, 3-4.

WASHINGTON (2706): Zach Christensen 219-406, Jay Niblick 196-335, Quincy Bruce 182-346, Mitch Beebe 187-372, Ryan Bundy 185-336.

IOWA CITY HIGH (2855): Shane Evans 205-366, Mike Beaumont 169-328, Jack Beaumont 210-378, Dan Saehler 167-327, Austin Kibbler 256-504.

Burrell wins twice, Warrriors split

CEDAR FALLS -- Tyler Burrell is having a successful season for the Cedar Rapids Washington wrestlers.

Burrell, ranked 10th in Class 3A at 285 pounds, won two matches Thursday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference double-dual at Cedar Falls.

Burrell pinned Nick Terpstra in 1:33 as Washington lost to Cedar Falls, 53-18. He posted a 4-2 decision over Darrell Caldwell as the Warriors bounced Waterloo East, 51-18.

There were only two bouts in the dual meet between Washington and Waterloo East. The Warriors won eight matches by forfeit, Waterloo East won two by forfeit, and neither school had a wrestler at two other weights.
