Washington High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Warriors upset No. 7 Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS - Jared Thorson pitched a complete game Wednesday night as the Washington Warriors clipped No.7 Cedar Falls, 4-3, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Cedar Falls.

Cedar Falls rallied for an 8-7 victory in the nightcap.

Alec Nichols was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the first game for Washington (6-13, 6-10). Matt Troendle was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Thorson scattered nine hits in the victory. He struck out two batters and walked one.

Washington jumped to a 6-0 lead in the second game, but the Tigers scored all eight of their runs in the last three innings for the 8-7 triumph.

Troendle drove in three runs for Washington in the nightcap.

Sommer helps Lions sweep Warriors

Linn-Mar shortstop Katie Sommer was a dirty, grimy, happy mess after the Lions swept Washington Tuesday night at Franklin Field.

Her eye-black had streaked down her face on both sides. Her black-and-red uniform was covered with dirt and chalk marks. And there were beads of sweat all over her shoulders and arms.

Yup, it was another successful night at the ballpark for the all-state crackerjack and leadoff hitter supreme. And yes, she was a mess.

"Oh gosh, I know," she said with a bright smile. "I've been in the dirt.

"I do my best to try and stop everything," she explained. "You're going to get dirty."

Cougars, J-Hawks lead Metro baseball

This is not shaping up as a particularly good year for high school baseball in the Metro area.

Only Kennedy and Jefferson have winning records in conference games. And only Kennedy, Jefferson and Xavier have winning records overall.

The Xavier Saints suffered a big loss this month when Mitch Keller accepted a $1 million signing bonus from Pittsburgh and left to begin his pro career.

The Linn-Mar Lions also have suffered a big loss with all-state catcher Brandt Ollinger playing travel ball this summer with an all-star team. Linn-Mar Coach Chad Lechner said Ollinger will be gone for an extended period of time.

Kennedy is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A and Jefferson defeated No. 1 Hempstead in the second game of a doubleheader Friday.

Here are the Metro records through June 22:

Kennedy         14-2 overall   10-2 MVC
Jefferson       13-6 overall   8-4 MVC
Xavier          12-8 overall   6-6 MVC
