Oler helps Warriors sweep Tigers

Emily Oler hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday as the Washington Warriors trimmed Cedar Falls, 8-7, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at the Washington field.

Oler then went 3-for-3, scored three runs and was the winning pitcher as the Warriors captured the second game, 11-0, in five innings.

Bria Lenton went 4-for-5 with a triple and three-run homer for Washington in the first game. Jessi Puk was 4-for-4 with two doubles. Payton Bruner was the winning pitcher.

Hannah Schroeder went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Washington in the second game. Annie Riley hit a two-run double.

Warriors lead all-Metro girls tennis

Seven members of the Cedar Rapids Washington girls tennis team have been named to the 2014 all-Metro squad after winning the Class 2A state title.

Lilly Hartman and Hannah Sherman were named to the first team. Rina Moore, Jennifer Greif and Kelly King were named to the second team. Callie Cook and Caroline Rossberger received honorable mention for the Warriors.

Ellie Anderson of Linn-Mar, Jessica Pedersen of Kennedy, Vale Caro of Prairie and Magui Caro of Prairie joined Hartman and Sherman on the all-Metro first team. All six players were unanimous selections.

Scott Leggat of Prairie was named the Coach of the Year.

Ellie Anderson (Linn-Mar), Jessica Pedersen (Kennedy), Lilly Hartman (Washington), Hannah Sherman (Washington), Vale Caro (Prairie), Magui Caro (Prairie).

SECOND TEAM

Kamin, Bertsch, Winter top all-Metro golf

MJ Kamin of Washington, Maddie Bertsch of Xavier and Grace Winker of Xavier are unanimous selections on the 2014 All-Metro girls golf team.

Emily Machula of Prairie, Teresa Lopez Moreno of Linn-Mar and Lauren Coughlin of Linn-Mar also were first-team selections.

Bertsch and Winker led Xavier to the Class 4A state title this season. Bertsch was the state medalist and Winker the runner-up.

Kamin placed second at the Class 5A state meet.

Julie Kadlec of Xavier and Bill Hoefle of Linn-Mar were the Co-Coaches of the Year.

Kamin, Rodriguez take 4th at coed golf

BOONE - MJ Kamin and Dominic Rodriguez of Cedar Rapids Washington shot a 78 Tuesday to finish fourth at the Class 2A state coed golf meet at Center Pointe Golf Course in Boone.

Kamin was the runnerup at the girls state meet this year.

 

Lueck, Carter help Prairie sweep Wash

Halle Lueck hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning and made a diving catch in the seventh as No. 8 Prairie trimmed Washington, 4-3, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Prairie Tuesday night.

Gabi Carter belted a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the fifth inning as Prairie captured the nightcap, 11-1.

Lueck gave Prairie the lead with her two-run double in the opener, then protected the advantage with her game-winning catch.

Lauren Kuch went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Prairie in the first game. Carter and Kristin Wahlert also had two hits. Natalie Halvorson pitched a complete game with six strikeouts for the Hawks.

Carter went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs in the second game. Lueck was 2-for-4 and scored three times. Natalie Rumer was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Kuch was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Shelby Frederick tossed a complete game for the victory.
