Lions ride no-hitter into semifinals

Ben Hilsenbeck and Ryan Wyant combined on a no-hitter Monday as the Linn-Mar Lions blanked Washington, 2-0, in the opening round of the Metro Baseball Tournament at the Jefferson field.

Hilsenbeck struck out seven batters in five innings, then Wyant fanned three batters in the final two innings for the Lions. They combined to walk seven batters, but the Warriors were not able to get any hits.

Brandt Ollinger went 2-for-3 for Linn-Mar and drove in a run. Jackson Jacobs hit a solo home run for th other run.

Chris Harrington pitched a strong game for Washington, allowing only six hits and two runs. He struck out six batters and did not walk anyone.

Spencer VanScoyoc tossed a strong game for Jefferson as the J-Hawks defeated Marion, 5-1, in the other first-round game at Jefferson.

VanScoyoc allowed only four hits and one unearned run in six innings. He struck out nine batters and walked only one man. Jared Eivings pitched the seventh inning for Jefferson.

Marcus Colbert, Spencer Hunt and Lucas Larson belted home runs for the J-Hawks.

Jefferson and Linn-Mar were supposed to meet in the semifinals Monday, but their game was postponed by rain. They will meet at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 5 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner facing Kennedy in the finals at approximately 7 p.m.

There were supposed to be consolation games Tuesday, but there were no plans to play those games due to the new configuration.

Schebler pinch-hit Sunday and struck out. He is hitting .234 (39 for 167) with 8 home runs and 26 RBIs.

Wash girls win regional tennis title

The Cedar Rapids Washington girls tennis team won the Class 2A regional title Saturday with a 5-0 conquest of Iowa City West at the Kennedy courts.

The Warriors reached the finals by blanking Kennedy in the semifinals, 5-0.

Washington did not lose a set the entire day.

Wash boys fall in substate finals

MARSHALLTOWN - The Cedar Rapids Washington boys tennis team lost to Iowa City West, 5-0, in the substate finals of the Class 2A tournament in Marshalltown Saturday.

The Warriors reached the substate finals with a 5-2 victory over Cedar Falls earlier in the day.

Jackson Hoyt, Oliver Hammond, Dane Van Antwerp and Ian McElree won their singles matches against Cedar Falls. Hoyt and Parker Muller clinched the match with a victory at No. 2 doubles.

J-Hawks, Jenks win more gold medals

DES MOINES - Jasmine Blue runs fast for a reason.

"I hate getting second," she said with a sweet, determined smile. "I love first."

Blue had that loving feeling Saturday afternoon with a gutsy anchor to help Jefferson win the sprint medley at the Class 4A state track meet in Des Moines.

Ashley Norem of Urbandale made a spirited bid to pull ahead of Blue on the 400 leg of the medley, but Blue refused to concede.

"I felt her the whole time, but I knew I had to do it," said Blue. "I already knew how it was going to feel if I was going to get second."

And as she said before, "I hate second."
