No.5 Warriors roll by Wahlert

Jacob Bjornsen and Antonio Patterson scored two goals Saturday as No.5 Washington sailed by Dubuque Wahlert, 6-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference soccer match at Kingston Stadium.

Emmanuel Hidalgo-Wohlleban and Austin Cook also scored for the Warriors.

Evan Fisher, Aroni Niyikiza and Bjornsen collected assists.

King helps Warriors clip Tigers

Kelly King scored on a penalty kick with 5:11 left in overtime Friday night as Washington trimmed Cedar Falls, 3-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls soccer match at Kingston Stadium.

Hannah Sherman and Olivia Altemeier also scored for the Warriors.

Mariam Bartlett and Carley Cross tallied for Cedar Falls.

Kennedy boys share track title

DUBUQUE - The Kennedy Cougars tied Iowa City West for first place at the Class 4A boys state track qualifier in Dubuque Thursday.

The Cougars and Trojans both finished with 107 points in the incredibly tight standings. Prairie placed third with 105.5 points and Dubuque Senior was fourth at 104.

Derek Jacobus (long jump), Willie Rhoads (high jump) and Marcus Perkins (400 hurdles) won titles for Kennedy. The Cougars also claimed the shuttle hurdle relay in a swift 57.42 seconds and won the 4x200 relay.

Tysen VanDraska captured the 800 meter run for Prairie. The Washington Warriors won the 4x100 relay.

The Washington girls won three events at the coed meet. Amarri Waller claimed the 100 meter dash. The Warriors also won the distance medley and 4x100 relay.

Kenzie Soeken of Prairie won the high jump.

Wash boys boot Waterloo East

Alex Kennedy scored two goals Thursday night as the sixth-ranked Washington boys soccer team rolled by Waterloo East, 9-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Kingston Stadium.

Antonio Patterson, Mike Eken, Nathan Metzger, John Henry, Emmanuel Hidalgo-Wohlleben, Connor Geuder and Aroni Niyikiza also scored for the Warriors.

Jacob Bjornsen collected two assists. Metzger, Niyikiza and Kennedy also had assists.

 

Anderson eyes state doubles title

Linn-Mar senior Brady Anderson will not win the Class 2A state singles title again this year, but it's not because anyone beat him at the district meet Thursday.

Anderson hopes to double his fun this year by playing for the state doubles title with his buddy Trevor McCann, rather than trying to defend his singles crown.

They got off to a good start Thursday by winning the district title at Clinton with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Michael Porubcin and Bryce Brien of Bettendorf in the finals.

Tennis players have to choose what they want to do in the postseason - singles or doubles - because they are not allowed to do both, according to IHSAA rules. Anderson and McCann have been friends since they were little kids, hanging around the courts at the Cedar Rapids Country Club, and they make a formidable pair.
