Winker paces Xavier golfers with 38

Grace Winker shot a 3-over-par 38 Wednesday to win medalist honors for the Xavier Saints in a triangular meet at St. Andrews.

The Saints finished at 171 to top Washington (201) and Maquoketa (244).

Maddie Bertsch of Xavier placed second with a 41. MJ Kamin of Washington shot a 44.

Warriors net win over Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS - Washington won five of six singles matches and swept the doubles matches en route to an 8-1 girls tennis win Tuesday over Cedar Falls.

Hannah Sherman won a 10-5 decision over Madison McCann at No. 2 singles and combined with Rina Moore to win at No. 1 doubles.

Lions top Warriors in boys tennis

Brady Anderson, Tim Paulsen, Trevor McCann, Kyle Brendes and Shane Skvor won their singles matches Tuesday as the Linn-Mar Lions clipped Washington, 6-3, in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis match between Metro powers at Washington.

Anderson topped Jackson Hoyt at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.

Lions now 3rd in boys soccer poll

The Linn-Mar Lions have climbed one spot to No. 3 in the Class 3A boys soccer rankings, the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association announced Tuesday.

Six Metro teams are ranked again this week.

Washington is ranked No. 5, Kennedy is No.6 and Prairie is No. 14 in the Class 3A poll. Xavier is ranked No.4 and Marion is ranked No. 13 in Class 2A.

Iowa City West is ranked No .1 in Class 3A and Norwalk is No. 1 in Class 2A.

No. 5 Warriors outlast No. 3 City High

The fifth-ranked Washington boys soccer team trimmed No.3 Iowa City High, 2-1, in a PK Shootout Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle at Kingston Stadium.

The score was tied, 1-1, after 80 minutes. Connor Geuder scored for Washington and John Havugarurema found the goal for City High.

Neither team scored in the first overtime or second overtime. The Warriors prevailed, 3-2, in the PK Shootout for the victory.
