Cougars, Warriors, Saints heading to state

Kennedy High School has a lot of friendly, fun-loving guys on its golf team, but something has been bugging them for nearly 365 days now, ever since they lost the 2012 state tournament to Waukee by a single shot.

"There's definitely a little anger," Davis Sutton said Monday. "It's frustrating to lose by one shot. We're going to definitely give it a run this year."

The Cougars served notice Monday with a dominating performance at the Class 4A district meet on a gorgeous day for golf at Elmcrest Country Club in northeast Cedar Rapids.

Sutton took medalist honors with a 3-over-par 73 and Kennedy captured the team title with an impressive four-man score of 299. Conner Koberg shot 74, Cole Murdock fired a 76 and Seth Nutt also had a 76 as the Cougars placed four guys in the top-10.

Warriors stun No.1 Saints, 26-10

Paul James quit coaching once. The way things are going now, it might be a long, long time before he ever quits again.

James and the amazing Washington Warriors tore the top-ranked Xavier Saints to shreds Friday night with a stunning 26-10 victory that was equal parts coaching genius and equal parts a phenomenal performance by the guys in red, white and blue.

The Saints and their homecoming crowd left the stadium with the same thought: Who were those guys?

Warriors riding surge of amazing win

Cedar Rapids Washington quarterback Reid Snitker has watched the replays of last Friday's 28-27 victory over Waterloo West several times now.

It's an instant classic.

He throws a touchdown pass with 61 seconds left. The on-sides kick is successful. He throws another TD pass to the same guy with 15.5 seconds left.

Just like that, a hopeless 27-15 deficit becomes an incredible 28-27 victory.
