Saints escape upset bid by Warriors

Even after dropping its second straight five-set match in a week, it was hard Tuesday night for Washington Coach Amy Faulkner to feel like it was a loss.

For one thing, her scrappy Warrior girls played highly ranked Xavier (No.7 in Class 4A) pretty much even-up right to the end on the Saints' home court.

“I can finally breathe now,” acknowledged Xavier Coach Krista Johnson afterward.

Wash swimmers win 4 events

DUBUQUE - Cedar Rapids Washington captured four events in a Mississippi Valley Conference swim meet against Dubuque Wahlert Tuesday night in Dubuque.

Wahlert won the meet, 109-73.

Jackie Allen claimed the 500 freestyle, Kaitlyn Nemickas won the 100 backstroke and Logan Eckhardt took the 100 breaststroke for Washington.

The Warriors also captured the 200 medley with Nemickas, Olivia Altemeier, Eckhardt and Allen.

Warriors, Hawks finish 2-2 at tourney

CEDAR FALLS - The Washington Warriors and Prairie Hawks both reached the quarterfinals of the Cedar Falls volleyball tournament Saturday and finished with 2-2 records.

Washington lost to Cedar Falls in the quarterfinals, 21-15, 23-21. The Warriors defeated Marshalltown and Waterloo East in pool play, but lost to Dike-New Hartford.

Prairie lost to Charles City in the quarterfinals, 21-18, 21-17. The Hawks defeated Waukon and Fort Dodge in pool play, but lost to Dowling Catholic.

Warriors swim 6th at WDM Valley meet

WEST DES MOINES - The Cedar Rapids Washington swimming team placed sixth out of seven teams at the West Des Moines Valley meet Saturday.

Waukee edged Valley for the title, 514-512.

Washington finished 8th in the 200 medley relay, 9th in the 200 freestyle relay and 10th in the 400 freestyle relay.

Kaitlyn Nemickas placed 9th in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.45 for the Warriors.

Gorman, Xavier girls win X-C races

IOWA CITY - Shannon Gorman of Cedar Rapids Washington captured first place at the Eastern Iowa Classic cross country meet at the University of Iowa course Thursday.

Gorman covered the 4 kilometer layout in 14 minutes, 56.04 seconds. She finished 41 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

The Xavier High School girls won the team championship by 22 points over Dubuque Hempstead. The Saints had three runners finish in the top-10 with Jenny Dickes (4th), Marinna Schroud (8th) and Addy Hoffman (9th).
