Lions knock out Warriors, 5-0

One got the feeling the baseball team to score first would keep its season alive.

Both Linn-Mar and Cedar Rapids Washington had chances through the first four innings of Friday night's Class 4A substate quarterfinal at Linn-Mar.

It was the Lions finally breaking through in the top of the fifth. Kyle Mortensen's RBI single to center plated Caleb Reimer with that all-important first run. Linn-Mar added another in the inning, two more in the sixth and one in the seventh en route to a 5-0 victory.

The win lifts Coach Chad Lechner's team to 25-15 and into Monday night's substate semifinal against Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The Cougars advanced with a 7-6 win Friday night over Iowa City High. Monday's game will be at Linn-Mar, beginning at 7 p.m.

Koolbeck helps J-Hawks 'kiss' Wash goodbye

On the back of her left hand, right at eye level when she’s at bat, Jefferson’s Maddie Koolbeck has big, bold letters that spell “KISS.”

“It stands for ‘Keep It Simple, Stupid’,” she said, explaining that her big brother Jake, an assistant coach at Clear Creek Amana, suggested it early in the year when she was struggling at the plate.

“I’ve had an up-and-down season,” noted the senior first baseman, her .342 batting average notwithstanding. “The problem is I think too much. I sometimes  overthink things instead of just going up there and hitting the ball.”

Koolbeck broke out of her perceived slump in a big way in the fifth inning Saturday night as the 10th-ranked J-Hawks belted Washington, 11-0, in five innings in the Class 5A regional semifinals at Larry Niemeyer Field.
