Washington High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Warriors skidding without Puk, Gillis

The Cedar Rapids Washington baseball team got off to a promising start this season, but the Warriors are struggling now without A.J. Puk and Zac Gillis on the team.

Puk is leaving Saturday for the University of Florida, where he'll join the baseball program and attend summer school.

Gillis leaves next week for Iowa Western Community College, where he'll join the football team and take a class this summer.

Both of them stopped playing for Washington last week and the results have not been good without those two big bats in the lineup. The Warriors have an 0-and-4 record without them and have been outscored, 32-4.

Davenport North defeated Washington, 7-2, Wednesday night in a non-conference game at the Washington diamond.

Iowa City West won the opener, 6-1.

Riley's game-winning hit came in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Washington is 5-18 overall, 2-14 in the MVC. Iowa City West is 11-12, 8-7.

Dostal sparks Warriors; Puk exits in style

Shortstop is the glamor position on any baseball team. The best athlete plays the position. Pretty girls think he's cute.

Noah Dostal abandoned that glamor spot to become the catcher for Cedar Rapids Washington this year. Catching is a hot, dirty, dangerous job that gets overlooked by fans.

Dostal voluntarily changed spots this year. In fact, it was his idea.

"I like it," he said Friday night. "It's where I belong."

Dostal starred for the Warriors as a catcher and hitter Friday as the Warriors swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Waterloo West, 8-5 and 16-6 in six innings, at the Washington field.
