Blades & Hoyt finish 4th

Linn-Mar junior Brady Anderson flashed a shy, almost embarrassed smile after he cruised to the Class 2A state tennis title Saturday afternoon at Coe College.

He should have done back-flips, but that's not his style.

Anderson overwhelmed Pleasant Valley freshman Charlie Humes, 6-0, 6-0, in the championship match to become the first player in 58 years to capture the title without losing a single game in the finals.

He also became the first state singles champion from Linn-Mar since Hunter Skogman claimed top honors in 1998.

Warriors learn lesson; headed to state

J.P. Graham and his Cedar Rapids Washington boys soccer team remembered what cost them in an earlier loss this season to Cedar Falls.

"We gave the a couple of goals on dead ball situations," Graham said of his team's 3-2 loss to the Tigers during the regular season. "We worked on it for two weeks and it showed today. We were a lot more comfortable out there today."

The Warrior defense stood tall and the offense came through with a pair of late first-half goals to post a 2-0 win in the Class 3A Substate 3 final at Kingston Stadium.

No. 4-ranked Washington (14-4) will playtop-seeded Iowa City West (17-1)  in the state quarterfinals Thursday at 5 p.m. in Des Moines. No. 8 Cedar Falls closes its season at 13-6.

Blades & Hoyt into state semis

Brady Anderson began banging a tennis ball around when he was about 7 years old. He's gotten pretty good at it over the years.

The Linn-Mar junior won both of his matches at the Class 2A state tournament Friday at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center and will play in the semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m.

Anderson, the No.1 seed, will face No.4 seed David DiLeo of Iowa City West in a battle to see who makes the finals at 2 p.m.

Wash, Kennedy advance on shootout wins

On a miserable night of marathon boys soccer at Kingston Stadium Wednesday, highly ranked Washington and Kennedy both survived scares from lesser foes to make into Saturday substate finals.

Each Class 3A semifinal game was tied 1-1 after two overtimes and decided in shootouts.

In the contest that started in drizzle at 5 p.m., fourth-ranked Washington escaped a scrappy Waterloo West bunch 5-4 on penalty kicks.

And in the nightcap that ended at 10:15 in a misty fog, fifth-ranked Kennedy squeaked by a young Dubuque Hempstead crew 4-2 in the shootout.
