Nzoyisaba helps Warriors tip Saints

If you liked Etienne Nzoyisaba as a distance runner at Cedar Rapids Washington the last few years, you might absolutely love him as a soccer player.

Nzoyisaba quit running on a track this spring and began running on a soccer field, giving the Warriors another potent weapon on a talented club.

Nzoyisaba made the key pass Tuesday night as the Warriors topped Xavier, 1-0, in a fierce Mississippi Valley Conference battle under the lights at Kingston Stadium.

Puk playing baseball for Washington

A.J. Puk has decided to play baseball for Cedar Rapids Washington this season, Coach Tony Lombardi confirmed Tuesday morning.

"That is true," Lombardi responded in an e-mail.

Puk, a 6-foot-6 lefthanded pitcher and first baseman, signed a national letter-of-intent with the University of Florida last November and is considered a top prospect for the Major League draft this June.

When Puk signed with the Gators, he said he was not sure if he'd play baseball for the Warriors this season or not. He said at the time that he planned to report for summer classes at Florida in late June and wasn't sure if wanted to leave the Washington baseball team in the middle of the season.

Kasha contributes for No.6 Warriors

Despite its No.6 ranking, the Washington boys soccer team has not been functioning as a smooth machine yet this season.

“We’ve been losing, winning, you know,” Kimu Kasha said before the Warriors’ April 18 match against Dubuque Senior. “It’s been tough, we keep on coming back.”

Kasha scored two goals despite wet, windswept conditions to lead Washington to a 3-0 win. In an early season in which it’s been difficult to assess the team’s overall potential, Kasha continues to be a reliable contributor for the 6-2 Warriors.

Kamin, Bertsch share 2nd at Hunters Ridge

Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids opened a state-of-the-art indoor facility this winter to help golfers work on their game when it was too cold or wet to play outside.

MJ Kamin of Washington and Maddie Bertsch of Xavier spent as much time there as they could and are glad they did.

Kamin and Bertsch shot 11-over-par 83's and shared runnerup honors at the Linn-Mar Invitational Wednesday afternoon at Hunters Ridge to establish themselves as two of the top female golfers in the Metro this year.

Rachele Miller of Pleasant Valley won the tournament with an 8-over 80 to help her team claim the team championship.
