Girls regional final moved to Ankeny

The championship game of the Region 6 girls basketball tournament in Class 5A will be played at Ankeny High School instead of Newton High School on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

The location was changed due to a scheduling conflict at Newton, according to the IGHSAU.

Cedar Rapids Washington, Cedar Rapids Prairie or Linn-Mar will be playing in the Region 6 finals against Waukee or Johnston.

Prairie will host Linn-Mar in the regional quarterfinals on Feb. 13, with the winner facing the Washington Warriors at Washington on Feb. 16. The survivor will advance to the regional finals and try to earn a spot in the state tournament.

 

No.9 Waukee nips No.8 Wash girls

WAUKEE - Dani Franklin scored 22 points and Aleena Hobbs had 16 in losing effort as No.8 ranked Washington was toppled by No.9 Waukee, 62-61, Saturday night in girls basketball.

Britney Boland led Waukee with 15 points.

Washington trailed 26-24 at halftime and 45-40 after three quarters.

The non-conference game was a possible preview of a Class 5A regional final next month. Both Washington and Waukee received byes into the Region 6 semifinals. If both teams win they would face each other on Feb. 19 at Ankeny.

Franklin, Hobbs power Warriors past Linn-Mar

Unable to counter the lethal one-two punch of Washington’s Aleena Hobbs and Dani Franklin, the Linn-Mar Lions were laid low on their home floor Friday night, 54-33.

Franklin had 17 points and Hobbs 15 to lead the No.8 Warriors (14-3, 8-2).

The two juniors were also the main cogs in their team’s rebounding machine, with Hobbs pulling down 11 and Franklin eight.

J-Bo II shines as Lions top Warriors

Jordan Bohannon's older brothers helped the Linn-Mar Lions win state basketball titles before moving onto the collegiate ranks at the Division I level.

If the youngest Bohannon is feeling any pressure to emulate his brothers, he's sure handling it well for a freshman.

Bohannon popped in a career-high 16 points Friday night as Linn-Mar dumped Washington, 58-37, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at the Washington gym.

Wahlert boys bowl over Warriors

DUBUQUE - Three Dubuque Wahlert boys rolled 400 series to lead the Golden Eagles past sluggish Washington, 3129-2769, Friday in a Mississippi Valley Conference bowling match at Cherry Lanes.

Zach Christensen led Washington with a 220 high game and 397 series.

Wahlert's Nick Banwarth rolled high series of 481 and he also had high game of 258.
