Wahlert rolls past Wash girls bowlers

DUBUQUE - Kristina Hochrein had the hot hand for Dubuque Wahlert on Friday with a 226 high game and 430 series that led the Golden Eagles past Washington, 2546-2299, in girls bowling at Cherry Lanes.

Ashley Duffy led Washington with a 321 series. Keely Pernicka shot high game with a 168.

Warriors hold onto No.8 spot in rankings

Cedar Rapids Washington held onto the No.8 spot in Class 5A in the Iowa Girls High School Atthletic Union basketball rankings released Thursday.

The entire top 10 remained the same in Class 5A.

Xavier, meanwhile, slid one spot to No.7 in the Class 4A rankings. The Saints (9-7) were beaten by Prairie on Tuesday.

All of the top-ranked teams remained the same - Ankeny in Class 5A, Sioux City Heelan in 4A, Davenport Assumption in 3A, Western Christian in 2A and Bedford in 1A.

No.8 Wash girls roll by Wahlert

The eighth-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington girls basketball team enjoyed its own gymnasium and put on a stellar show Tuesday night with a 76-45 victory over Dubuque Wahlert in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

The Warriors utilized the continuous clock for a good share of the second half.

“Our game plan was to apply a great deal of pressure, try and speed up the game on Wahlert and be effective as rebounders,” said Washington Coach Frank Howell.

Mission accomplished.

Warriors clipped by Wahlert boys

DUBUQUE -Austin Bergstrom scored 14 points for Washington, but the Warriors fell short of Dubuque Wahlert, 54-52, Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game.

Jason Oney added seven points for the Warriors (1-13, 1-8).

Domen Zevnik scored 23 points to lead Wahlert (5-8, 4-5).

Xavier, Wash girls net favorable draws

The Xavier Saints will not have to leave 42nd Street for the Class 4A regional girls basketball tournament this year, making a potential trip to the state tournament perhaps a little easier for them.

The Washington Warriors, on the other hand, will have to travel to Newton for the Class 5A regional finals if they advance that far, making their path to the state tournament a little harder.

Xavier and Washington are the two best bets from the Metro area to reach the state tournament in Des Moines this season, and they learned their regional assignments Monday when the pairings were released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
