Hughes, Thorson lead Warrior tankers

Josh Hughes and Jared Thorson won four events apiece and Washington beat Bettendorf, 93-77, Tuesday night in boys swimming at the Washington pool.

Ryo Ueno and Nick Saulnier were triple winners for the Warriors.

Hughes won the 200 and 500 freestyle events, and also swam on the winning 200 and 400 free relays.

Thorson won the 50 free and 100 butterfly, and swam on the medley and 400 free relays.

Bergstrom named All-American in soccer

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Austin Bergstrom has been named an All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Bergstrom collected eight goals and six assists for the Warriors last season when they finished with an 11-8 record. He was honored as a midfielder.

A total of 77 players were named to the All-American team. To be selected, an athlete must play for a school whose coach is an NSCAA member.

 

Bowling a family affair for Pernicka clan

Cedar Rapids Washington’s Keely Pernicka is off to a great start this year leading the Metro area with a 219 bowling average.

Pernicka, a junior, has been bowling for the Warriors since she was a freshman, but has been bowling so long it took some help from mom and grandma to recall that it was third or fourth grade when she she started bowling.

Pernicka began bowling in a league at Westdale Bowl where she could bowl and get a free ball. From there her passion for the sport has grown as it is truly a family affair.

“My grandma, aunts, uncles, everybody bowls,” Pernicka said. “During the summer we get together every Friday to bowl.”

Warrior girls hold off No. 8 Iowa City West

IOWA CITY -- Washington held off a furious Iowa City West rally and beat the eighth-ranked Women of Troy, 63-61, Friday night at West.

Abby Herb scored 21 points to lead the Warriors (3-2, 2-2). Dani Franklin added 17 points and Madison Kramer had 12.

Ally Disterhoft scored a game-high 33 points for West.

Washington built a 33-24 lead by halftime and stretched the margin to 49-33 after three quarters.

Christensen, Bruce power Warriors past J-Hawks

Zach Christensen shot a 499 series and Quincy Bruce a 480 to power Washington past Jefferson, 3169-2865, Friday in boys bowling at Lancer Lanes.

Christensen shot games of 268 and 231. Bruce fired games of 236 and 244.

Kyle Kaness shot a 418 series and Bryan Cline a 402 for the Warriors.

Zach Ficken led Jefferson with a 238 high game and 426 series. Christian Hindt shot a 416 series and 234 high game.
