Washington spikers 2nd at Prairie

Washington dropped a three-set match to Mediapolis and finished second Saturday at the Starcevich Invitational at Prairie High School.

Mediapolis won the six-team tournament with a 5-0 record. Washington was 4-1. Mediapolis beat the Warriors, 17-21, 21-16, 16-14.

Prairie was one of three teams to finish with a 1-4 mark. The Hawks were awarded fifth by virtue of their win over South Tama. The scores were 21-11 and 21-14.

Nelson helps No. 4 Saints top Warriors, 35-13

Matt Nelson towered over everybody else at Kingston Stadium Thursday night.

Literally and figuratively.

The 6-foot-8 junior caught two touchdown passes and excelled on defense as No. 4 Xavier escaped upset-minded Washington, 35-13, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

Trojans shoot past Warriors

IOWA CITY - Iowa City West had five players shot 40 or lower and the Trojans beat Washington, 152-169, Thursday in a boys golf meet at Finkbine.

Max Classen shot a 39 to lead Washington. John Kopec and Joe Slattery shot 43, and four Warriors shot 44.

Hughes wins 3 events; Warriors drench Wahlert

Jackie Hughes won three events and Washington used its superior depth to beat Dubuque Wahlert, 107-79, Tuesday night in a girls swimming meet at Washington.

Hughes won the 200 and 500 freestyle events and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay.

Maddie Dietz won the 100 backstroke and swam on the winning 200 medley relay for the Warriors.

No. 8 Xavier spikers sweep Warriors

The Xavier High School volleyball team got a healthy dose of confidence Saturday when it defeated Kennedy at the Dubuque Invitational.

The Saints kept it going Tuesday night against Washington.

Xavier swept the Warriors, 25-18, 25-17, 25-23, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Washington with a strong performance.
