Warriors go 3-1 at Iowa City West tourney

IOWA CITY -- Cedar Rapids Washington went 3-1 Saturday at the Caroline Found Volleyball Extravaganza at Iowa City West.

The Warriors went 3-0 in pool play, scoring straight-set wins over Pella Christian, West Des Moines Dowling and Davenport North.

Washington was upended in three sets by Waterloo Columbus in the championship bracket quarterfinals. The Warriors won the first set, 25-14, but dropped the next two, 25-20 and 15-13.

Host Iowa City West beat Dyersville Beckman in two sets in the championship match.

No.1 Tigers top Warriors, 31-16

Washington tailback Mitch Bredeson is listed at 5-foot-8 and weighs a solid 160 pounds with soaking wet full pads.

But the latest of Washington's talented scatbacks kept pounding and pounding into the middle of a massive Cedar Falls line Friday night at Kingston Stadium despite getting gang-tackled time and again.

Same for his club, which battled the state’s top-ranked 4A team all night, even after costly mistakes at inopportune times kept putting them deeper in a hole they couldn’t escape.

Washington gave up 14 quick points in the first three minutes of the game and finally fell, 31-16, after getting nine gut-check points in 30 seconds late in the fourth quarter.

Allen, Hughes and Asplund lead Warrior swimmers

Jackie Allen, Jackie Hughes and McKenzie Asplund won four events apiece to lead Washington past Marshalltown, 112.5-73.5, Thursday in a girls swimming meet at Washington.

Allen won the 50 and 100 free and swam on the winning medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Hughes won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke and swam on the winning medley and 200 free relays.

Asplund won the 200 free and 500 free and swam on the winning 200 and 400 free relays.

Warriors post 2-stroke win at The Meadows

DUBUQUE -- Washington's Dominic Roodriguez and Evan Jankwietz each carded 40s to lead the Warriors to a two-stroke win at a triangular boys golf meet at The Meadows.

Linn-Mar was second and host Dubuque Senior was third.

Linn-Mar's Jason Gingrich and Senior's Quinn Dawson tied for medalist honors at 39.

Washington spikers sweep Prairie, 3-0

Hanna Reese collected 30 assists Tuesday night and Aleena Hobbs had nine kills as Washington swept a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match against Prairie, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18, at the Washington gym.

Kellie Walters had 10 digs for the Warriors, who raised their season record to 5-2. Dani Franklin had four aces and Reese contributed three blocks.
