Washington High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Warriors sunk by IC West, 140-46

The powerful girls swimming team from Iowa City West won all 12 events Tuesday and dunked Cedar Rapids Washington, 140-46, at the Washington pool.

The Women of Troy finished first and second in every individual event except the 100 freestyle, where Washington senior Jackie Hughes gave Ariel Roghair a good battle before falling short by 3-hundredths of a second.

Saints claim volleyball title at Washington

The back of Xavier volleyball coach Barb Sullivan’s jersey reads, “No limits.”

And after her Saints defeated Class 4A third-ranked Solon Saturday afternoon to win the Washington Warrior 12-team tournament, she’s even higher on her veteran squad’s prospects this season.

Ranked 10th in 4A coming into the 21st annual tourney, the Xavier girls dropped their opening match in pool play to Solon but then sailed back to win their next four outings to force a rematch in the championship final.

They took the deciding match in three sets, 21-18, 13-21, 15-10, denying the perennially powerful Spartans their second straight Warrior Invitational title. Solon had defeated Marion last year in the finals.

Trojans too powerful for Warriors, 62-37

IOWA CITY - Cedar Rapids Washington quarterback Mitch Blades put together a great game on Friday night. The problem for the Warriors, though, was that Iowa City West signalcaller Nate Boland’s performance was a step above great.

Boland lit up the humid air and passed for 340 yards and three touchdowns as No. 6 Iowa City West pummeled the Warriors, 62-37, at Trojan Field.

In the first half alone, Boland racked up 294 passing yards as the Trojans (2-0) built up an insurmountable 48-17 lead at the break. As it was shown, West is the beneficiary of a great offensive scheme and dangerous weapons.
