No. 7 Warriors rout Jeff girls

Offensive rebounds and defense was the name of the game.

The No. 7 ranked Washington Warriors collected an astonishing 27 offensive rebounds and defeated the Jefferson J-Hawks 74-41 Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game at the Jefferson gym.

Washington moved to 14-3 overall, 11-2 in the MVC. Jefferson dropped to 5-11, 4-9.

Warriors fall to Jeff in 2OTs

The heroes for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson basketball team posed for a picture Friday night after the J-Hawks topped Washington, 58-50, in double-overtime.

There was Jarrod Uthoff, who joined Jefferson's 1,000-point club with another big outing. There was Tyler Meiborg, who played a key role for the J-Hawks with his scoring and leadership. And there was 6-year-old Max Meiborg, Tyler's nephew, who is a cancer survivor and a courageous young boy.

Steady Warriors zap Xavier

 Ryan Bundy rolled a 231 high game and Zach Christensen a 449 series to lead Washington past Xavier, 2976-2660, Friday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys bowling match at Lancer Lanes.

Christensen rolled games of 226 and 223 for Washington (6-7, 3-5 MVC). Nick Seng rolled a 224 game and Bundy had a 433 series.

Kyle Elliott rolled a 226 high game and 405 series for Xavier (0-10, 0-8).

Warrior swimmers win MVC division title

IOWA CITY – Surprising Washington claimed the Mississippi Division title and finished third overall Saturday in the Mississippi Valley Conference Boys Swimming Championships at Mercer Park Aquatic Center.

Linn-Mar finished fourth in the Mississippi Division and seventh overall, Kennedy was sixth in the Mississippi Division and ninth overall, and Jefferson was fourth in the Valley Division and 10th overall.

Top-ranked Cedar Falls won the Valley Division and was the overall champion.

Burrell wins twice, Warrriors split

CEDAR FALLS -- Tyler Burrell is having a successful season for the Cedar Rapids Washington wrestlers.

Burrell, ranked 10th in Class 3A at 285 pounds, won two matches Thursday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference double-dual at Cedar Falls.

Burrell pinned Nick Terpstra in 1:33 as Washington lost to Cedar Falls, 53-18. He posted a 4-2 decision over Darrell Caldwell as the Warriors bounced Waterloo East, 51-18.

There were only two bouts in the dual meet between Washington and Waterloo East. The Warriors won eight matches by forfeit, Waterloo East won two by forfeit, and neither school had a wrestler at two other weights.
