Boys keglers fall at City High

IOWA CITY -- Austin Kibbler rolled games of 256 and 248 for a 504 series that sent Iowa City High past Washington, 2855-2706, Friday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys bowling meet at Colonial Lanes.

Zach Christensen rolled a 219 high game and 406 series for Washington (5-7, 2-5 MVC). Jay Niblick had a 196 game and Mitch Beebe a 372 series.

Iowa City High is 5-6, 3-4.

WASHINGTON (2706): Zach Christensen 219-406, Jay Niblick 196-335, Quincy Bruce 182-346, Mitch Beebe 187-372, Ryan Bundy 185-336.

Ashley Piper headed to Colorado Christian

Ashley Piper had never heard of Colorado Christian University before last summer, but she’s learning fast.

Piper has signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball at the NCAA Division II school in Lakewood, Colo., next season.

Piper, a 5-foot-9 guard, is averaging 7.1 points for the Cedar Rapids Washington girls’ basketball team, which is 9-0 and ranked fifth in the state.

Alex Carr commits to UNI

Washington running back Alex Carr announced Monday night that he has decided to play college football at the University of Northern Iowa, The Cedar Rapids Gazette reported on one of its websites.

Carr said he will play either running back, cornerback or safety. He was a two-way starter for the Warriors at running back and cornerback.

Carr rushed for 1,911 yards and 25 touchdowns in 10 games as a senior.

Oglesby ready to run-and-gun with the Hawkeyes

Sure, he’s a proud dad.

But after 32 years of coaching basketball, the last five as an assistant at Mount Mercy University following a successful stint at Kirkwood, Ted Oglesby knows college talent, too.

And he’s convinced his high school senior son Josh will shine next year for the revitalized run-and-gun Iowa Hawkeyes under new coach Fran McCaffery.

“They like to get out and go, and Josh is athletic enough that he’ll fit right in,” the elder Oglesby said Wednesday at Washington High School after his son signed his formal national letter of intent to attend the University of Iowa.

“I wouldn’t have said this a year ago, but the coaching philosophy there now is perfect for Josh. He brings a lot of dimensions to the game.”

A 6-foot-6 shooting guard who averaged 16.2 points a game for the Warriors as a junior while hitting on 40 percent of his three-point shots, Oglesby is also a deft passer.
