Visser scores 14 as Washington tops Wahlert 56-48

Anne Visser led a balanced attack with 14 points as the Washington girls basketball team beat Dubuque Wahlert 56-48 to open the season Tuesday at Washington.

Courtney Squires had 13 points for the Warriors, Joniqua Clark had nine, and Kandis O’Donnell added eight.

Charlotte Flynn led Wahlert (1-1) with 14 points.

Warrior swimmers edge Trojans, 89-81

IOWA CITY – Cameron Kelley and Nick Saulnier each won two events to lead the Washington boys swimming team to an 89-81 win over Iowa City West on Tuesday.

Kelley won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles for the Warriors in 1 minute, 50.35 seconds and 5:06.27, respectively. Saulnier won the 200 individual medley(1:59.04) and the 100 backstroke (53.80).

Nick Saulnier wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington junior Nick Saulnier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Saulnier is one of the top swimmers in the state for the Warriors and he got off to a fast start at the Metro meet at Washington last Tuesday. He won the 200 individual medley in 1:58.46 and captured the 100 backstroke in 53.29.

Saulnier's times in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke are the best in the state so far this season.

Kelley, Saulnier, Thorson pace Wash swimmers

Cameron Kelley, Nick Saulnier and Jared Thorson were double-winners Tuesday in the Metro swim meet at Washington High School.

Kelley captured the 200 free and 500 free, Saulnier won the 200 IM and the 100 back, and Thorson claimed the 50 free and 100 fly.

Brennan Urbi of Kennedy took the 100 free and Paul Hummell of Jefferson won the 100 breaststroke. Linn-Mar won the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Kennedy took the 400 freestyle relay.

No team scores were kept.

Kennedy boys out-bowl Wash

James Jambois led Kennedy with a 425 series as the Cougars downed  Washington, 2,992-2,575, in the boys bowling opener for both schools Monday at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

Bryan Cline led Washington with a 447 series.
