Turner commits to Wyoming football

Xavier High School offensive lineman Cole Turner has committed to play football at the University of Wyoming, according to the Iowa Prep Sports website.

Turner, 6-4, 275, helped the Saints make two straight trips to the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs in 2012 and 2013.

Craig Bohl, who led North Dakota State to the FCS national title in 2011 and 2012, is the new head coach at Wyoming.

Turner is also a successful wrestler at Xavier. He is ranked seventh in Class 3A at 285 pounds.

Xavier (4-2) is the only ranked team from the Metro area. Kennedy (5-1) received votes in the Class 4A rankings.

The No.1 teams are Iowa City West in 4A, Harlan in 3A, Western Christian in 2A and Newell-Fonda in 1A.

Turner was a mainstay on the offensive line for the Xavier football team the last two seasons as the Saints made two straight trips to the state finals, but he played basketball when he was younger and never donned a singlet until last year.

Xavier wrestling coach Ryan Chambers can only wonder how good Turner would be now if he had tried the sport as a freshman.
