Saints, Cougars rise in girls rankings

The Xavier Saints climbed one spot from No.3 to No.2 in the Class 4A girls basketball rankings, the IGHSAU announced Thursday.

The Kennedy Cougars climbed two notches from No.9 to No.7 in Class 5A.

Xavier hosts Dubuque Hempstead Friday night. Kennedy visits third-ranked Waterloo West Friday night.

The top-ranked teams this week are Dowling Catholic in 5A, Harlan in 4A, MOC-Floyd Valley in 3A, Western Christian in 2A and Newell-Fonda in 1A.

Drahozal dazzles in mat losses

IOWA CITY - Nick Drahozal had a pair of major decisions, but Xavier dropped a pair of Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling meets Thursday at Iowa City West.

The Saints were beaten by West, 40-22, and fell to Dubuque Hempstead, 39-30.

Drahozal beat West's Nathan Kelsay, 14-0, and Hempstead's Blake Thurston, 12-3. Both bouts were at 152 pounds.

Sean Ickes and Josh Gerke also posted a pair of wins for the Saints.

Vega commits to Illinois State

Xavier High School defensive tackle Daniel Vega has committed to Illinois State, according to a story on the Iowa Prep Sports website.

Vega helped the Saints compile a 12-2 record this season and reach the championship game in the Class 4A playoffs.

He said he'll attend Illinois State unless he gets an offer from an FBS school. Illinois State is an FCS school that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Saints ready to join 3A football

Xavier High School's days as a powerhouse in Class 4A football are probably over, with the Saints likely headed to Class 3A next year.

That's not all. The Mississippi Valley Conference's days as a football league could be over as well, with district football looming on the horizon for everyone.
