Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Saints defense smothers City High, 34-0

Hunter Baldus is the “other” defensive end.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Xavier senior just happens to play opposite Matt Nelson, a 6-8, 250-pounder who is heading to the University of Iowa next season.

Baldus may not get the headlines Nelson does, but make no mistake, he is a fine player in his own right.

And you likely wouldn’t get any arguments from a physically-whipped Iowa City High team that left Saints Field a 34-0 loser Monday night in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Turner helps pave way for Saints

Colton Turner has been a tower of strength for the Xavier Saints on the offensive line this year.

He tips the scales at a rock-solid 275 pounds, without an ounce of flab.

"Yeah, we call him Moose," said Xavier tailback Brendan Miller. "He's a big boy. He got that nickname and it stuck."

Saints earn date in 4A regional finals

Several good runs, lots of big hits and not too many errors.

Fifth-ranked Xavier merely went about its business at home Thursday night in dispatching DeWitt Central 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 in the semifinals of the Class 4A Region 6 volleyball tournament.

The Saints (28-10) will likely face a tougher test for a state tourney berth when they meet third-ranked West Delaware (36-5) Tuesday night at Dyersville Beckman.

“We seem to play much better when we're playing up in competition,” said Xavier Coach Krista Johnson. “When we play higher-level teams, we play with more excitement and energy. We need to sustain that level of play.”

Saints stroll in playoff opener, 45-0

Xavier kicker Ryan Persick shanked his first punt out of bounds for a two-yard net gain.

Other than that, Saints Coach Duane Schulte was asked Wednesday night after a home field 45-0 shellacking of Clinton, was there anything his team did wrong?

“Well,” the laconic veteran said after a pause, “we did fumble once but we jumped right on it.”

In a Class 4A first-round playoff game that wasn't as close as the score might indicate, sixth-ranked Xavier scored the first six times it had the ball and led 42-0 at halftime.
