No.1 Saints playing air-tight defense

Xavier High School coaches and players give the same stock answer when you ask about their incredible defensive performances this year.

"We're doing OK" ... "We could do better" ... "There's room for improvement."

If that's true - if the top-ranked Saints can play even better than this on defense - then opponents might not score another point against them all season.

Saints stay No.1 in Register rankings

The Xavier Saints continued to sit in the No.1 spot in the Class 4A football rankings Sunday, the Des Moines Register announced.

The Saints (4-0) cruised to a 38-0 victory against Dubuque Wahlert at Loras College in Dubuque Friday night. Xavier plays Kennedy (3-1) this Friday night at Kingston Stadium.

The Cedar Falls Tigers, ranked No.2 last week, dropped out of the poll after losing to Waterloo West, 17-16.

Saints suffocate Wahlert, 38-0

DUBUQUE -- It's a proven scientific football fact no defense is impregnable, but Cedar Rapids Xavier is sure challenging the theory.

Everyone's got weaknesses hidden in the cracks. It might be trouble recognizing the option read. It might be a suspect secondary or a lack of speed.

Xavier defenders will be the first to tell you they're not perfect. The Saints are indeed a human high school unit with holes.

Thing is, no one has come close to discovering any deficiencies in Xavier's gold-plated defense over the first half of the season. How do you solve a unit yielding less than a field goal of offense per week (2 points) and getting better and sharper by the game?

Xavier boys win Cascade Invy

CASCADE - Xavier placed three runners in the top 10 and won the Cascade Invitational boys cross country meet Friday at Fillmore Fairways Golf Course.

Jacob Schmitt led the Saints with a third-place finish. Luke Koechner was eighth and Steven Culpepper 10th.

Xavier beat Center Point-Urbana by eight points. Marion was fourth. The Indians' top runner was Colton Forster, who finished sixth.

The Xavier girls finished a distant second to Davenport Assumption. Jenny Dickes was the Saints' top finisher in sixth place.

Xavier ranked 8th in Class 4A

Xavier is No.8 and Marion No.12 in Class 4A volleyball rankings released Thursday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Xavier and Marion are the only Metro teams in the rankings. Xavier held on to the No.8 spot despite a loss to Class 5A unranked Kennedy on Tuesday.

Bettendorf is ranked No.1 in Class 5A. Harlan replaced Solon atop the Class 4A poll after the Spartans were beaten by Linn-Mar last weekend.
