The Xavier Saints like to keep things simple on defense.
Simply outstanding. Simply impressive. And simply suffocating.
The top-ranked Saints held Prairie to 92 yards of total offense Friday night and squashed the Hawks, 23-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Xavier.
John Ingwersen shot a 37 to claim medalist honors and led Xavier to a 3-stroke win over Linn-Mar in a boys quadrangular golf meet Thursday at St. Andrews.
Kellen Gray shot a 39 for Xavier.
Jake Sevcik led Linn-Mar with a 39. Trevor McCann shot a 40.
Cedar Rapids Xavier is eighth and Marion 12th in this week's Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Class 4A volleyball rankings released Thursday.
Xavier (6-2) and Marion (4-3) remain the only ranked Metro teams.
The No.1 teams in the state are Bettendorf (Class 5A), Solon (4A), Sheldon (3A), Dike-New Hartford (2A) and Holy Trinity (1A).
CEDAR FALLS - Kayla Torson had 18 kills and Britni Scholtes collected 42 assists Tuesday night as ninth-ranked Xavier trimmed Cedar Falls, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23, in a tight Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match in Cedar Falls.
Halle Heying had 31 digs for the Saints and Scholtes made 14. Madsy Richards contributed 11 kills.
The Xavier Saints remained in the No.1 spot in the Class 4A football rankings by the Des Moines Register Sunday.
The Saints (2-0) blanked Jefferson, 44-0, Friday night.
Cedar Falls (2-0) is ranked No.2 in the poll. The Saints and Tigers will meet in a Mississippi Valley Conference showdown at Xavier Oct. 18.
Dowling Catholic is ranked No.3 in Class 4A, followed by Pleasant Valley, Bettendorf and Iowa City West in the 4-5-6 spots.
