Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Yegge ejected as Hawks split with Saints

Joe Yegge may set a record this year for turning the Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team into a Top 10 program so quickly.

If he's not careful, he may also set a record for being ejected the most times in a single campaign.

Yegge got tossed for the second time Thursday, but it didn't stop Prairie from splitting a Mississippi Valley Conference showdown with Xavier at Bob Erusha Field.

The Hawks rallied for an 8-6 victory in the first game after Yegge was ejected for arguing with an umpire. He returned for the nightcap, but Xavier collected a 4-3 victory after Prairie had rallied to tie the game at 3-3.

Schulte helps Saints with his arm

Reggie Schulte used his brains and talented right arm to help the Xavier Saints reach the championship game of the Class 4A football playoffs last fall as their star quarterback.

Tuesday night, Schulte used his same attributes on the mound to help the Saints defeat Bettendorf, 8-3, at Ken Charipar Field.

Xavier (14-8) has come out of its funk and has begun to put things together with five straight victories. The formula for success has been timely hitting, good pitching and defense.

Breitbach hits for cycle as Saints sweep

When your last name is Breitbach and you play sports at Xavier High School, people know who you are.

That's perfectly okay with Morgan Breitbach, a member of the Xavier softball team and also a member of the Class 4A state championship basketball team this year.

Dick Breitbach Sr., her grandfather and the patriach of Xavier and Regis athletics, sat in the front row behind home plate Tuesday night when the Saints faced Waterloo West in a doubleheader.

Her grandmother, Kitty, sat next to Dick in the front row. Alongside were her parents, Dick Breitbach Jr. and Jill.

Morgan treated her family to a show.

Breitbach hit for the cycle as the Saints swept the Wahawks, 11-2 and 10-0 in five innings, at Bob Erusha Field.
