Revived Saints pound Hempstead twice

The Xavier Saints looked like they might contend for the state baseball title this year when they ran away with the Metro Tournament last month, but they went into a batting slump and disappeared for a few weeks.

"We're back," senior Zach Brown announced happily Monday night.

The Saints pounded Dubuque Hempstead in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Ken Charipar Field, 11-1 and 11-0, with both games lasting only five innings due to the mercy rule.

Schemmel tosses shutout as Xavier sweeps

DUBUQUE - Eric Schemmel tossed a four-hit shutout Friday as the Xavier Saints blanked Dubuque Senior, 7-0, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Dubuque.

The Saints won the nightcap, 6-4.

Adam Pick went 2-for-4 and Mitch Keller drove in two runs in the first game for the Saints (11-8, 6-6).

Corbin Woods went 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple for Xavier in the second game. Luke Hammerberg hit a two-run, two-out single in the sixth inning.

Dubuque Senior fell to 7-13 overall and 4-8 in the league.

No.8 Saints sweep Waterloo East

WATERLOO - The Xavier High School softball team swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Waterloo East, 8-5 and 8-1, Thursday night in Waterloo.

The Saints, ranked No.8 in Class 4A, raised their records to 13-5 overall and 10-4 in the MVC.

Allison Schwach went 3-for-4 in the first game for Xavier. Sydney Galligan was 2 for 3 and Hayley Deutmeyer was 2 for 4. Erin Drahozal got the win in the circle.

Galligan went 2-for-4 with a triple in the second game. Drahozal hit a solo home run. Jacey Wiebold got the victory.

   

Late rally sends Dowling past Saints

Dowling Catholic scored three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings and came from behind to beat host Xavier, 8-3, Thursday night in a non-conference baseball game at Ken Charipar Field.

Xavier (9-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when an RBI single by Zach Brown plated Bryce Grimm.

Xavier pitcher Reggie Schulte allowed two runs in four innings but left with the Saints trailing, 2-1.

Saints hold onto 8th, J-Hawks slip to 9th

Xavier maintained its hold on the No.8 spot in the Class 4A softball poll released Thursday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Jefferson, meanwhile, slid one spot to ninth in the Class 5A rankings.

Ottumwa is No.1 in Class 5A, followed by Pleasant Valley. Dubuque Senior, which split with Jefferson on Tuesday, dropped one spot to No.5. Dubuque Hempstead is No.10.

Dallas Center-Grimes is No.1 in Class 4A, followed by Winterset. Solon is No.3 and Benton No.10 among ranked Wamac Conference teams. Center Point-Urbana is No.15 in Class 3A.
