Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Armstrong, Shepard pace No.1 Saints

Xavier girls’ soccer coach Bailey Dorrington hopes to get a more balanced offense before the team’s next game in the Class 2A regional finals, but she wasn’t too upset with Tuesday’s 6-0 win over Independence.

“Ideally, we’d like to spread that out a bit more,” Dorrington said after the regional semifinal at Xavier’s Heco Field. “But right now, it’s you lose, you’re done, I don’t care who scores.”

The top-ranked Saints will host No.9 Waverly-Shell Rock in the regional finals Monday at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to the state tournament in Des Moines.

Xavier beats weather, CCA for state berth

Not even Mother Nature could knock the Xavier boys soccer team off its game in Saturday’s Class 2A substate final.

“Our goal every game was to come out and get the early goal, because that  really boosts our confidence,” senior co-captain Eli Smith said after Xavier’s 5-0 home win over Clear Creek-Amana.

Playing on a sodden pitch under a steady rain that intensified in the second half, Xavier got that goal in just the third minute as co-captain Isaac Frisch converted on Smith’s assist.

Saints pound Warriors for title

If baseball practice ever gets tedious at Xavier High School this season, Coach Dave Schemmel could simply blow his whistle and tell the guys to line up for a game of touch football.

These Saints would know exactly what to do.

Schemmel has 28 players on his roster this season, and 21 of them played football last fall and helped Xavier reach the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs and finish with a sparkling 13-1 record.

Many of the same guys who excelled in football have helped the Saints get off to a fast start in baseball, too.

Xavier whipped the Washington Warriors, 11-1, in six innings Thursday night to win the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the Linn-Mar complex.
