Jasper, Bouchard sisters advance to state meet

WATERLOO - Xavier's Allison Jasper and the Saints' doubles team of Jeanne and Claire Bouchard placed second in Thursday's Class 1A regional tennis tournament at Byrnes Park.

They will advance to the state meet May 30-31, also at Byrnes Park.

Jasper won three matches before falling to Dubuque Wahlert's Courtney Schneider, 6-1, 6-2, in the finals. The Saints' Kylie DeWees was ousted by Schneider, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

Bouchard and Bouchard also won three matches to reach the finals. They were beaten by Wahlert's Caroline and Elizabeth Ott, 7-5, 6-1.

Kueny's clean sheet propels Hawks past Saints

Curt Lewis knew his Prairie boys soccer team probably wasn't as good as its 8-0 start.

He also knew they weren't as bad as the team that had lost four of five during one stretch.

The Hawks brought a 12-4 record into Thursday night's game against a powerful Xavier team. They bent all match long, but due to the stellar play of senior keeper Adam Kueny, came away with a hard-fought 1-0 win, ruining Senior Night for 13 Xavier 12th graders.

Saints roll to Kennedy Invitational golf win

Xavier's Maddie Bertsch shot a 76 for runnerup medalist Monday and the Saints claimed first place at the Kennedy Invitational girls golf meet at Ellis Park.

Bertsch was one of four Saints to finish in the top 10. Grace Winker was fifth, Kara Zwanziger seventh and Lisa Olberding ninth.

Xavier won by 12 strokes over Ottumwa. Linn-Mar was fourth, Kennedy sixth, Prairie seventh and Jefferson ninth in the nine-team field.

Metro teams loaded for state track meet

First Drake, now state.

That could be the motto for Metro athletes this week as they eagerly prepare for the state track meet in Des Moines.

Metro athletes won six gold medals at the Drake Relays, where they competed against the top performers from all around the state regardless of school population.
