Saints have solid ballclub for 2013

Xavier is looking to pick up the pace and be a bit more aggressive this season, and with four of its top five pitchers returning and a junior group to provide some much needed speed it looks as though the Saints are ready to take off.

The Saints lost only three players from their 21-15 team of 2012. Gone are all-around standout Mack Mattke’s .383 hitting and 3-3 pitching record, Tyler Hines’ 2-2 record and solid second baseman Mitch St. Andrews, who contributed a .341 average.

Ramlo's goal lifts Saints by Lions

Connor Ramlo scored in the third minute of the game Thursday as the Xavier Saints blanked Linn-Mar, 1-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer game on a cold, wet night at Linn-Mar.

Ramlo received a pass from Isaac Frisch, eluded a Linn-Mar defender and booted the ball into the low right corner of the goal.

Xavier is ranked No.1 in Class 2A and Linn-Mar is ranked No.7 in Class 3A.

Both teams had scoring opportunities as the game proceeded, but neither team found the net in the next 77 minutes.

Xavier girls pin 1st goal and loss on Lions

Neither wind nor rain nor bitter cold could keep two of the best of the state’s girls soccer teams from their appointed round ball matchup Thursday night.

For the next 78 minutes, the Saints and the visiting Lions of Linn-Mar battled back and forth to a standstill.

Xavier High School junior Maddie Bertsch is thinking seriously about playing golf in college in a few years.

Don't bet against her.
