Metro teams dominate boys soccer poll

Kennedy heads up a four-team contingent from the Metro ranked in the top seven of this week's Class 3A boys soccer poll released Wednesday by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Kennedy is ranked No.1 and received all 10 first-place votes cast in the poll. Washington is ranked fifth, Prairie sixth and Linn-Mar seventh.

Xavier is ranked No.1 in Class 2A. The Saints received all but one first-place vote.

Armstrong's 2 goals lead Saints past Wash

Kayla Armstrong scored two goals, added an assist and led Xavier past Washington, 3-0, Tuesday in girls soccer at Xavier.

Armstrong scored twice in the first half, both on assists from Sami Shepard.

Brylee Bastain's goal off an assist from Armstrong with 14:03 left salted the game away.

Xavier keeper Sarah Chicchelly had nine saves.

 

Nzoyisaba helps Warriors tip Saints

If you liked Etienne Nzoyisaba as a distance runner at Cedar Rapids Washington the last few years, you might absolutely love him as a soccer player.

Nzoyisaba quit running on a track this spring and began running on a soccer field, giving the Warriors another potent weapon on a talented club.

Nzoyisaba made the key pass Tuesday night as the Warriors topped Xavier, 1-0, in a fierce Mississippi Valley Conference battle under the lights at Kingston Stadium.

Armstrong's goal lifts Saints in 2OT

Kayla Armstrong's goal with 5:45 left in the second overtime lifted No.1 Xavier past Muscatine, 2-1, Monday in girls soccer at Xavier.

Monica Busse staked Xavier to a 1-0 lead. She scored with 30:06 left in the first half off an assist from Jenny Dickes.

Muscatine scored a tying goal with 21:46 left in the first half.

Xavier girls netters rout Jeff, 9-0

Xavier won all nine matches and rolled past Jefferson, 9-0, Wednesday in girls tennis at Xavier.

Xavier's Allison Jasper beat Menna Abouzied at No.1 singles, 10-3.
