Armstrong's 14 lead Saints past J-Hawks

The Xavier girls basketball team didn't get caught looking ahead to the postseason when they met Jefferson Tuesday night at Jefferson.

Kayla Armstrong scored 14 points and Ashley Stulken added 10 as the Class 4A No.4 Saints beat the J-Hawks, 64-54.

Xavier (12-8) won the first meeting between the schools, 53-47, back in December. This game did not count in the conference standings, but still gave the Saints a sweep of the season series.

Jefferson (8-12) was led by Taylor Jacobson's 17 points. Maddie Koolbeck added 13 and Kaitlyn Davidson had 10.

Schulte will join UNI football program

Xavier High School quarterback Reggie Schulte has accepted an invitation to join the University of Northern Iowa football team as a preferred walk-on.

Schulte helped the Saints compile a 13-1 record and reach the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs this fall. He was named all-state by the Iowa Newspaper Association, the Des Moines Register and IowaPreps.com and has been selected for the 2013 Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star game.

Schulte passed for 2,501 yards and 37 touchdowns with only eight interceptions this past season and broke numerous school records.

Three other members of the Xavier football team have committed to college programs as well.

Linn-Mar girls stop Xavier in 2 OTs

It took the Linn-Mar girls two overtimes to put away Class 4A fourth-ranked Xavier Friday night, 57-54, in an exciting Mississippi Valley Conference battle at Linn-Mar.

The game was nip and tuck the entire way.

Sara Strauel of Linn-Mar was called for a controversial foul going for an offensive putback with .4 seconds left in the fourth quarter. It put Morgan Breitbach on the line to shoot two free throws for Xavier in a tie ballgame, but she missed both shots and the game went to overtime.

Roth, Lassen lead Linn-Mar past Xavier

Jimmy Roth and Matt Lassen combined for 23 points and led Linn-Mar past Xavier, 52-44, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game at Xavier's Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

Roth and Lassen scored 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Lions (9-8, 8-4).

Xavier (8-9, 4-8) was paced by Adam McDermott with 14 points and Matt Nelson chipped in with 12.  Nelson was a force on the boards and had some clutch hook shots to help his field goal shooting.

Trcka leads Saints past Waterloo West

WATERLOO - Tara Trcka had the line for Xavier on Friday, rolling games of 205 and 214 for a 419 series that led Xavier past Waterloo West, 2827-2805, in girls bowling at Maple Lanes.

Xavier held a 76-pin lead after the first round, but West came storming back in the Baker round. The Saints lead melted to five pins after West shot a 253 in the first round.

Xavier held off the Wahawks with scores of 222, 221, 191 and 193 in its final four Baker games.
