Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Saints top Wahawks in OT, 59-55

Overtime games are always fun.

And the Xavier boys’ 59-55 squeaker at home Thursday night over Waterloo West was as entertaining as they get.

“For the fans, maybe,” said Saints assistant coach Brad Stovie. “But not for the coaches.”

The visiting Wahawks fell behind early and never led. When it looked like they might be blown away, they came back.

Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Courteney McCrary was a one-girl wrecking crew in the second half and her teammates did a nice job picking up after her Tuesday night on their home floor as the Hawks cleaned conference co-leader Xavier, 54-47.

McCrary, a rock-solid 5-foot-9 senior prone to foul trouble, knocked down seven of eight shot attempts after halftime on the way to a game-high 21 points.

While she was scoring from all angles, Prairie (11-5, 7-2 MVC) built a one-point lead into a 16-point bulge with 5:30 to go.

The Washington Warriors, on the other hand, will have to travel to Newton for the Class 5A regional finals if they advance that far, making their path to the state tournament a little harder.

Xavier and Washington are the two best bets from the Metro area to reach the state tournament in Des Moines this season, and they learned their regional assignments Monday when the pairings were released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
