Saints whipped by Wahlert, J-Hawks

Clint Lembeck and Nick Drahozal had a pair of wins, but the Xavier wrestling team fell twice Tuesday in a double dual at Jefferson.

The Saints were beaten by Dubuque Wahlert, 36-25, and lost to Jefferson, 54-19.

Lembeck had a technical fall against Wahlert and then scored a major decision over Jefferson's Patrick Rashed.

Drahozal had a major decision against Wahlert, then dropped down a weight class to 138 and pinned Jefferson's Zach Kester.

Xavier girls nudged by Valley, 66-64

WEST DES MOINES - The Xavier Saints put up a good fight on the road Saturday before falling to West Des Moines Valley, 66-64, in a girls basketball game.

Hayley Deutmeyer led the Saints (6-6) with 17 points. Kayla Armstrong had 12 points and five steals. Ashley Stulken scored 11 points and Maddie Bertsch had 10.

Xavier led, 50-46, after three quarters. The Saints were outscored 20-14 in the final stanza.

Xavier zaps Warriors to end 3-game skid

Snapping a three-game losing streak was big for the Xavier boys Friday night.

But the 56-42 win over Washington in the Warriors gym was a bittersweet one for Saints rookie Coach Ryan Luehrsmann.

It was the place, after all, where he learned to play the game at age six in kids camps under legendary Coach Don King. And it was where the 1996 Wash alum was an all-stater for Coach Tom Kummer before going on to start at the University of Iowa.

Luehrsmann was inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

Wash boys bake Saints bowlers

Washington overcame a 100-pin deficit with a hot Baker round and rallied to beat Xavier, 3063-3035, Friday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys bowling match at May City Bowl.

Quincy Bruce had the line for the Warriors, rolling games of 217 and 255 for a 472 series. Zach Christensen fired a 244 game and 457 series and Kyle Kaness had a 224 game for Washington.

Xavier's Kyle Elliott shot high game and series with a 266 and 477, respectively. Zach Klemish shot a 432 series and Kirby Guge a 419. Guge had a 237 game, Klemish a 228 and Nick Terfler a 224.

Wash topples Xavier in girls bowling

Courtney Snodgrass shot a 209 high game and Lynze Moon a 388 series as the Washington girls toppled Xavier, 2618-2500, Friday in a bowling match at May City Bowl.

Xavier's Tara Trcka shot high game and series with a 237 and 410, respectively. Lisa Olberding shot a 212 game.

Washington held an 83-pin lead after the first round and won the Baker round by 35 pins.
