Torson named Athlete of the Year in MVC

Xavier sophomore Kayla Torson has been named the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Xavier and Washington claimed two spots on the Valley Division's top unit. Torson was joined by teammate Sarah Homan.

Washington''s first teamers are Hanna Reese and Dani Franklin.

Saints garner 6 spots on all-MVC

Cedar Rapids Prairie quarterback Jace Hanna has been named the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference for the 2012 campaign.

One of the people he topped for the award is Xavier quarterback Reggie Schulte, and they'll meet Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs at Xavier.

Xavier claimed six spots on the Valley Division's top unit with Schulte, Corbin Woods, Seth Fahnle, Emeliano Martinez, Craig Murtha and Ryan Persick.

VandenBosch helps Saints make state volleyball

WASHINGTON, Iowa - Kasey VandenBosch has attended the state volleyball tournament in Cedar Rapids since she was a little girl.

This time she won't have to buy a ticket.

VandenBosch played a strong match Tuesday night as the ninth-ranked Xavier Saints swept Fairfield, 25-21, 25-13, 25-15, in the Class 4A regional finals on a neutral court in Washington.

The Saints (26-11) will face top-ranked Charles City (42-1) in the opening round of the state tournament next Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena at 6 p.m.

Prairie-Xavier playoff tickets on sale

Tickets to Friday night's Class 4A playoff game between Prairie and Xavier at Saints Field will be on sale at Xavier High School on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the activities office from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily.

All tickets cost $6. No passes will be accepted because it is an IHSAA sponsored event.

The gates at Saints Field will open at 5:45 p.m. on Friday for all fans who have purchased tickets in advance. The ticket booth will open at 6 p.m. on Friday. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance to avoid waiting in long lines Friday night.

Xavier makes its plays count in rout

It's not how many plays you run as much as it is what you do when you have the football.

Waterloo East ran 37 more plays than Xavier in Monday night's second round game of the Class 4A playoffs at Saints Field.

No. 3 Xavier squashed the Trojans, 45-0.

Xavier (11-0) advances to Friday's quarterfinal round where the Saints will host Prairie (8-3). The Hawks stunned No. 2 Iowa City West, 49-28, Monday night. Friday's game kicks off at 7 p.m.
