'Singing Saint' helps Xavier get ready

Harry Daubitz has dress shoes, dancing shoes and football shoes at Xavier High School and enjoys wearing them all.

He performs in honor choir, sings at his church, performs in show choir and recently made the all-state choir. He's in so many choirs that he kind of lost count.

"Five or six," he said.

Daubitz, a tenor, also sings a happy tune for the third-ranked Xavier football team that will host Waterloo East in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs Monday night.

Schulte owns MVC record for TD passes

Xavier High School senior Reggie Schulte has broken the Mississippi Valley Conference record for most touchdown passes in a single season.

Schulte has thrown 33 touchdown passes this season, snapping the former MVC record of 29 TD passes thrown by Guy Martino at Kennedy in 2007.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that Corbin Woods of Xavier and Jarred Edmonds of Prairie had tied the MVC record with 14 TD receptions. Andy Henry of Linn-Mar caught 18 touchdown passes last season.

No. 9 Saints move closer to state volleyball

Sarah Homan is a calming influence on the court and Kayla Torson is a killer.

Together, they hope to lead the Xavier Saints to the Class 4A state volleyball tournament in two weeks.

Homan collected 37 assists and Torson had 25 kills Thursday night as the ninth-ranked Saints moved a step closer with a 25-16, 25-21, 27-25 victory over Clear Creek Amana in the regional semifinals at Xavier.

The Saints (25-11) will face Fairfield (27-7) in the regional finals Tuesday night on a neutral court in Washington, Iowa, with the winner claiming a berth in the state tournament at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena Nov. 7-10.

Schulte's 5 TD passes lead Saints

Xavier's first game in the Class 4A football playoffs Wednesday night looked a lot like its other nine during the regular season.

Another rout.

Senior quarterback Reggie Schulte threw a school-record five touchdown passes to lead the No. 3 Saints past Iowa City High, 48-10, in a first round game at Saints Field.

Saints stay No. 3 in Register rankings

The Xavier Saints remained in the No. 3 spot Sunday in the final Class 4A football rankings by the Des Moines Register.

The Saints (9-0) will host Iowa City High (4-5) in the first round of the playoffs at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The top four teams in the Class 4A rankings have all enjoyed a perfect regular season with 9-0 marks. Ankeny is No. 1, followed by Iowa City West, Xavier and Pleasant Valley.
