Superstitious? Schulte just likes a routine

Duane Schulte is superstitious, but maybe he's too superstitious to talk about his superstitions. He might jinx himself.

"I have a pattern, I guess," he said Saturday morning, not taking the bait. "Most coaches are a product of a routine."

Some folks say the Xavier football coach has a lucky cap that he wears to games.

What about it, Coach?

"Not necessarily," he replied. "I just wear the caps we have. I've had this same cap, I guess, for a while, though.

"In terms of clothes, most coaches are like farmers. Give them something for free and they'll wear it."

Saints finish perfect regular season

Perfect regular season.

Xavier scored all six of its first-half possessions to build a 42-0 lead and buried Linn-Mar, 42-6, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division football game at Saints Field. The game was the regular season finale for both teams.

It is the second perfect regular season for Xavier (9-0, 6-0) in school history. The Saints also earned their second outright division title. The last time Xavier had an undefeated season and outright division title was in 2006. Those Saints won the Class 4A state championship.

Xavier boys claim spot in 3A state field

CENTER JUNCTION - The Xavier boys cross country team and Marion's Peter Rethwisch claimed spots in next week's Class 3A state meet during Thursday's state qualifier at Jones Park in Center Junction.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals qualified for the state meet, which will be held Sat., Oct. 27, at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge.

The Xavier boys finished second in a tight three-way race. Mount Vernon-Lisbon was first with 59 points, followed by Xavier with 68 and Fort Madison with 69. Marion was a distant fourth with 121 points.

Saints top Wahlert in 4A showdown

The Xavier Saints outlasted Dubuque Wahlert, 27-25, 22-25, 28-26, 21-25, 15-9, in a showdown of premier Class 4A volleyball teams Tuesday night at Xavier.

The Saints, ranked No. 9, raised their record to 24-11 by defeating the 13th-ranked Golden Eagles.

Xavier also finished the Mississippi Valley Conference season as Valley Division champions. The Saints were 6-0 in Valley Division matches.

Saints climb to No. 3 in Register rankings

The Xavier Saints climbed one spot to third in the Des Moines Register Class 4A football rankings on Sunday.

The Saints (8-0) defeated then-No. 2 Cedar Falls, 24-7, Friday night at the UNI-Dome. Cedar Falls (7-1) fell to ninth this week.

Xavier hosts Linn-Mar Friday night.
